Personal hygiene refers to the cleaning and grooming of the body. Personal hygiene is an important form of protection against disease and infections of all kinds. Hygiene promotes comfort, safety, and health.

Duty of care is not only about physical risks, you also have a duty of care to treat people with dignity and respect. As a care worker you must promote the independence of of service users whilst protecting them as far as possible from danger or harm. Cleaning schedules are in place to prevent and control infections. The environment should be visibly clean and acceptable to residents, staff and visitors. Regular cleaning is important to maintain the appearance and function of the premises, the chosen method of cleaning should remove the contamination and not spread it. Cleaning schedules are put in place to inform users, staff and visitors who cleaned, what is cleaned, what time and day cleaning takes place, whether something needs to be cleaned daily, weekly or monthly and what chemicals were used to clean. 3.
Unit 86 – Maintain Personal Hygiene 1.1 Explain why personal hygiene is important Maintaining personal hygiene is of key importance for many reasons; personal, social, health, psychological or simply as a way of life. Keeping a good standard of hygiene helps to prevent the development and spread of infections, illnesses and bad odours. Outcome 2 Be able to support individuals to maintain personal hygiene 2.1 support an individual to understand factors that contribute to good personal hygiene By helping the individual to understand that in order to have good personal hygiene, the individual must have regular wash and bath/shower. This includes washing individuals hair, wearing clean clothes and keeping nails clean. by telling them to wash their hands after using the toilet can help individual to prevent any infections that may affect them. 2.2 address personal hygiene issues with the individual in a sensitive manner without imposing own value To give if the service user the choice they would like to have a wash/shower/bath and when they would to have one.
Regular hand-washing with bacterial soap is needed to ensure that no infection is being transferred from the employee to another area. It is the employees’ responsibility to maintain an control any infection using the correct equipment and to so do safely. 1.2 – explain employers’ responsibilities in relation to the prevention and control of infection. It is the employers’ responsibility to provide correct PPE for their employees’ use to maintain a controlled setting. In order for the employees’ to carry out tasks safely and securely they need to supply the right PPE that will be able to prevent and control any infection as well as keeping the employees’ safe.

The effects of poor hygiene can cause skin problems, unpleasant smells and bacterial or parasitic hygiene. When carrying out personal hygiene on individuals, dignity should always be maintained by; •keeping service users covered up whenever possible •always knock and wait before entering a room in case personal care is being carried out. •make sure curtains or blinds are shut.
