Iago feels that the best way to do so is by manipulating Othello telling him that his wife is cheating on him with Cassio, who Iago coincidently hates as well. Iago reveals, “That thinks men honest that but seem to be so, and will as tenderly be led by the nose as asses are. I have ‘t. it is sengender’d. Hell and night must bring this monstrous birth to the worlds light” (Shakespeare 1.
How does Shakespeare present the theme of jealousy in Othello? Firstly, jealousy is the main theme in the play. It basically takes over the character's lives causing them to do stupid things. For example, at the beginning of the play, Roderigo is already jealous of Othello as Othello has Desdemona and he does not. Another example of jealousy is at the end of the play where Othello thinks that Desdemona has been unfaithful towards him with Casio.
Hamlet feels heartbroken when his mother, Gertrude marries the new King, Claudius. Hamlet is also seen as a tragic hero because he faces and accepts death with honor. However, it is not just Hamlet that could be seen as a tragic hero, Ophelia and Gertrude can also be seen as tragic heroes. Aristotle defined tragedy as 'the imitation of an action that is serious and also, as having magnitude, complete in itself'. A tragic hero will effectively gain our fear and pity if he is a good mixture of good and evil.
Hamlet portrays falsity when using rage against Ophelia after discovering she has been apart of a plot of revenge. He uses this as an opportunity to deny his love for her and degrade her until she felt horrible about her self. “I did love you once but you should have not belived me; for virtue cannot so inoculate our old stock but we shall relish of it. I loved you not.”(3.1.114-119). It becomes clear that Hamlet did truly love Ophelia, yet hid it because he was a coward.
Don Pedro’s loyalty towards his friend Claudio has portrayed him as an insensitive character regarding his comments about Hero. Don Pedro is so quick to believe that he has been “dishonour’d” by Hero that he clearly overlooks the fact that his villainous brother Don John, who has in fact lied before, is simply tricking him again. Some may regard Don Pedro as being loyal and trying to give what is best for his friend, but most think that Don Pedro’s actions portray him as an insensitive character who jumps to conclusions rather quickly. So once again, Don Pedro’s intention of trying to help do what is best for his friend, is
Look here it is.”(III.iii.) Iago’s manipulative ways have earned him what he needs to succeed in the demise of his counterparts. By being loyal to her husband, Emilia has caused a great deal of harm to the woman she cares so deeply for. Another conversation of Desdemona is brought up between the Ancient and his general and this time Iago explains to Othello that he had seen Cassio with his ladies handkerchief. Othello later questions Desdemona about the handkerchief and she cannot answer where it is.
As the play unfolds, it can be seen that Othello is in fact “enfettered to Desdemona’s love.” Othello, as a rational soldier, became a blind lover. He was so overcome by his love for Desdemona, that all rational thinking was abolished. Othello, as soldier who was inexperienced in love, could not control all the emotions flooding through him. His decisiveness as a soldier lead him to seek “ocular proof” of his wife’s infidelity and when Iago presents him such proof, his decision to peruse a bloody course is made swiftly. As the conclusion of the play draws near, Othello tells his men “speak of one who loved not wisely, but too well.” Moments before stabbing himself, Othello finally understood the error in his ways – the fact that he love blinded him from his true intentions.
He understands that this marriage is based upon an impulsive decision made by the couple since he knows how Romeo reacts to love. Earlier, Friar Lawrence gives caution to the unity because even though he thinks this marriage can be in the best interest for everyone, he understands the consequences of marrying the pair. However he
Already we can see this villain spawning but does not show his hate to Othello. In addition, Iago influences Othello to believe that Desdemona is cheating while all along she is being truthful about her innocence. Iago does this to try to gain Othello's trust in hopes that when Cassio is lowered from his
Othello, one of the catastrophic tragedies by William Shakespeare, an eminent English poet and playwright, portrays the story of a general in the service of Venice; Othello, is manipulated by his ensign Iago, against his beloved wife Desdemona and his honest and trustworthy lieutenant, Cassio. Throughout the play Shakespeare tries to address the theme “jealousy” by using language techniques such as metaphors, and examples of other characters. He positions the readers in regard to this theme by informing the dangers of Jealousy, and how it can be fuelled by mere circumstantial evidence that can destroy innocent lives. In the play, ’jealousy’ is the main reason which abolishes the lives of the most of characters. A malicious character such as Iago generates jealousy in others ingeniously.
