Northerners don’t want to annex Texas because it will throw off the balance of Free states and slave states. In Document B. Channing argued against annexing Texas because if Texas was annexed to the States, it will strengthen the power of slave states. Meanwhile, in Document C. McDuffie want to annex Texas because it will lead to an increase of slave population. War against Mexico was also a source of division. President Polk want to go to war with Mexico, while the Wig protested against going to war with Mexico.
‘The American Revolution and the Irony of Slavery’ The American Revolution redefined economic, political and religious freedom in colonial America and around the world. Americans of the revolutionary generation were preoccupied with the social conditions of freedom. The contradiction between freedom and slavery seem so apparent that it makes it difficult to understand the obstacles to abolition. During the revolutionary era slavery became the focus of international debate for the first time in world history. The United States changed dramatically in a very short time after the Revolution, the transition was not an easy one, militarily, politically, and culturally.
The American Civil War was fought over a few reasons, but slavery is thought to be the major reason for the war and even today, slavery is "front and center" as the reason for the war. Ultimately, the American Civil War was the result of economic, social, and political differences between the Northern States and the Southern States. The Southern economy was driven by the growth of cotton, which needed a huge amount of work force, in this case slaves. Some of the Northern states had abolished slavery, others agreed on the gradual emancipation after the American Revolutionary War, and their economy was industrial based. There was a dispute between free-states and slave states over the new territory, California, though the issue was temporally fixed with the Compromise of 1850.
Eventually leading to the outbreak of the Civil war in 1861. This all began with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1847, providing new land in the south-western territories. However, the main problem was what to do with this new found land. Free Sollers and Northern Whigs heavily opposed the spread of slavery, but the southerners wanted more land for agriculture and increase their political power. Henry Clay’s proposition was accepted in 1850, however, this did not fix all issues.
Although Thoreau was not the first to introduce these ideas, he may have been the first to bring it to the attention of many Americans. They both effectively illustrate their philosophy that civil disobedience is a necessity. As I said before, Thoreau was writing during the transcendentalism era in America during the mid 1800s. The main issue behind “Civil Disobedience” is slavery that is taking place in America. By this time, slavery is a very hotly debated issue in America, even eventually leading to the Civil War.
2.) There are a few points to compare and contrast the acquisition of Texas and the Southwest with the annexation of Oregon. For one, the acquisition of Texas was forced basically through war while Oregon was done with a treaty. In Texas, annexation came when many settlers started to migrate to Texas with the promise from the Mexican government of land for the exchange of converting to Roman Catholic and to be a Mexican citizen. On page 428, it says that many didn’t like the Mexican culture or government and refused to convert.
DBQ: The Alien and Sedition Acts "Although the Alien and Sedition Acts, created in 1798, spurred great dispute, they were created under constitutional guidelines. The acts helped to protect the government of the United States from potential threat." Using the documents and your knowledge of the period, evaluate this statement. Document A Source: Thomas Jefferson, Draft of Kentucky Resolutions, 1798. Although Congress passed for bills known as the Alien and Sedition Acts in 1798 intending to help protect the government of the united states from potential threats, they did not truly protect Americans from their foreign enemies.
In the early years of the republic, there were various controversial issues that divided the American people. The ratification of the Constitution split people up into Federalist and Anti-Federalist groups, which were those who wanted the Constitution to be ratified, and those that didn’t. Before the Louisiana Purchase, people were also split on whether or not the purchase was going to be worth it in the long run. When the issue of expansion of slavery into the territories was brought up, Southern-extremest and Northern-soilers could never seem to come to an agreement. Before the Constitution, there were the Articles of Confederation.
The American Civil War began April 12, 1861 and ended May 9, 1865. This war is sometimes called “The War Between the States” because it was fought between the North, also known as the Union states, and the South, also known as the Confederate states. The Civil War was triggered by the election of Abraham Lincoln as president in 1860, because Lincoln wanted to put an end to slavery and keep the Union together. As the United States continued to grow and to have more states join the Union, problems began when the North and South fought over whether the new states would come in as slave states or not. The territorial expansion of the United States played a great role in the Civil war because it indirectly affected slavery.
What Lead to the Civil War. From the beginning of the United States, war was inevitable between the North and the South, over the issues of slavery. Ever since Eli Whitney’s invention of the cotton gins in 1790, the South has been on a completely different economic path from the North. In the 1850’s political developments, the Fugitive slave act, the Dread Scott decision, and the John Brown raid, eventually all drove the regions further and further apart. Even though the North and South tried to reconcile their differences on the issue of slavery by implementing compromises in the 1820’s and 1850’s, both attempts failed, leading up to the Civil War.
