Compare how language is used to express an opinion of love in sonnet 116 and another poem (Quickdraw) Shakespeare’s ‘Sonnet 116’ and Carol Ann Duffy’s poem ‘Quickdraw’ both talk about the relationship between two people, however they talk about them in very contrasting ways. Sonnet 116 and Quickdraw are written in different forms. Shakespeare’s poem is written in sonnet form with three quatrains and a rhyming couplet. This regular pattern shows that this is what love should be like and is normal. The use of iambic pentameter also stresses key ideas and words whilst the poem can still flow.
How is the theme ‘Love’ expressed differently in the poems ‘Sonnet 116’ and ‘Love’s Philosophy’? The theme of love is frequently used and explored during literature. Although it is expressed differently, ultimately they all have the same meaning. Love is strong and undying. It is an intense feeling of deep affection that conquers all, making you feel comforted and appreciated.
I could visualize that the person he is talking about is the most beautiful individual ever. I could see this by the way he compared her to “…night of cloudless climes and starry skies.” I could also sense feel as I read the poem. He described her cheek and brow, “so soft, so calm, yet eloquent,…” Figurative Language: What poetic devices were used in this poem? What did these poetic devices do for the poem? In her 17’th century poem, “To my Dear and loving Husband” the female Puritan poet Anne Bradstreet showers her husband with accolades of their wonderful Earthly love that they share for each other. In the 12 line lyric she expresses the importance and duality of both an Earthly love between a husband and wife also being a service mankind's love for god. The overall organization of the poem is 3 quatrains of two rhyming couplets each. The six couplets help to convey the sense of a harmonious loving couple. The rhyming pattern they use is AABBCCDDEE almost exactly and the iambic pentameter (5 feet of one unstressed followed by a stressed syllable) give the poem a very comfortable and perfectly designed feeling.
They both explore the theme of love or rather painful love. the poet revels the link between the two poems’s through a verity of techniques which is done very effectively but also shows the difference between the obsessive love in “Havisham” and the possessive love of “Valentine”. The pain of love is evident from the beginning in both poems. “Carol Ann Duffy” uses the tone in the first couple of stanzas to show the unorthodox nature of the love. “Not a day since then I haven’t whished him dead”-Havisham This is very effective as the aggressive tone shows “Havisham” has been rejected and her love is causing her pain.
The Aeolian harp was often used by Romantic poets during this period as a symbol for poetic inspiration; a popular instrument frequently found in places of burial at the time it was written. We can deduce it was written by an educated person by further reference in stanza six to Memnon, who, in Greek mythology, was immortalised by Zeus. The rhythmic form and rhyme scheme is established in the first stanza, and is followed throughout the poem. The form of the poem has a very regular meter. It consists of eleven four-line stanzas.

In line one, Frost says “world will.” The repeating of the W sound gives alliteration. He also gives another example at the end of line four when he ends it with “favor fire.” In line six, Frost shows consonance by saying, “think I know enough” with the repeating sound of the consonant N. Along with his poetic devices, he also has a rhyme scheme which appeals to the reader and makes it easy to read and connect to the narrator. Frost’s poem centralizes around the metaphors of fire and ice.
