OCEAN, SEAS, RIVERS AND LAKES General description Healthy oceans are a vital natural resource. Major bodies of water includes bays, canals, channels, falls, gulfs, lakes, oceans, rivers, seas and strait. It covers 71 % of the Earth. Example: Pacific Ocean, Baltic Sea, Yangsu River, Aral Sea. Concerns – How serious? There is this truism that “Life cannot exist without water”. Unfortunately this precious resource is in danger of becoming a cause of conflicts like never before. The world is running out of its most precious resource. • The world is shortage of water. Why? There is not enough freshwater to support the entire human population. • 70% of the world’s surface is covered by water. 97.5% of that is salt water. Remaining 2.5% is fresh water. 68.7% of 70% is frozen in ice caps and glaciers. That leaves less than 1% is available for human use. • Dumping cause pollution problems which may lead to lack of water for a community and lack of food source for a community (for people who lives near the river). As 48% of the world’s pollution live in areas near the water. • The UNEP reports that 1.2 billion people are being affected by polluted water, and that dirty water contributes to 15 million child deaths every year. • Global warming is a major concern is that the warming is causing the sea level to rise – problem is properties and major cities in low lying area will be destroyed as the ocean rise. (more casualties – more death, more problem in the world) Example: New York and Melbourne. • World Water Day 2013 – As the world populations wells to over 7 billion people; demand for fresh water continues to grow with it. As climate change and political and social unrest take their toll on fresh water supplies, 783 million people lack access to clean or safe water. • By 2025, 1.6 billion people that live in areas of the globe are considered to be
