Controversy Controversy North Shore School District 112, which is located in Northern Lake County, Illinois, and represents 12 schools in the school district. The several communities that the district serves are Highland Park, Highwood, and Fort Sheridan. The district, which boasts of more than 100 years of educating children, has called for a strike recently. The teachers are not worried about the 4,300 students who are taught, they are worried about better pay, benefits, and advancement. It is understood in the United States than one an individual joins the workforce one expects certain amount of compensation and teachers are no different. The website goes into great detail about how and why teachers need an increase in pay and benefits. Data from the 2009 National Assessment of Educational Progress, known as the nation’s report card-show Indiana’s fourth and eighth graders ranking number eighteen in math and as high as number twenty-one in reading (Indiana Department of Education, 2012). A far cry from the top ten positions but taxpayers want better educations for one’s child, and performance pay seems like the vehicle to get one’s child a better education. If an individual is looking to become a teacher in this century one must decide if money is the motivational factor when going to school to become a teacher. Does an individual become a teacher because he or she loves to educate and inspire the leaders of tomorrow? With performance-based pay playing a huge role it will be interesting to see what happens in North Shore School District 112 this year.
