Social Networking Facebook and Twitter are two well-known social networking sites used worldwide. Primarily focused on high school and college students they allow us the accessibility to stay in touch with family and friends. We can post pictures, messages, and share information from the comfort of our own computers or smart phones. As harmless as this sounds, these sites have negative effects that outweigh the positive. These negative effects often cause distractions that don’t allow students to perform to their full potential. The involvement on Facebook and Twitter cause students to multitask, leads to an increase in poor grammar, and can reduce your physical health. Multitasking is a common habit that anyone can easily pick up, especially when they get bored. Students often multitask when studying or listening to lectures. When they have access to technology, like cell phones and laptops, it’s actually more of a distraction than they think. Students use those opportunities to check various social sites, text, and email, post pictures, and play games. Which leads to my second point. Multitasking reduces your focus on retaining any significant information. Almost similar to selective hearing. There’s only a small window of time when students are actually focused on what they need to be. Even then, students have a hard time remembering what they just heard from a lecture or read out of a book. As technology has gotten more advanced over the years, an increase in poor grammar has become an issue. Students are often unable to write effectively without some aid from spell check programming. Cell phones have autocorrect for texting and computers have auto spell for Microsoft programs. When students have to write papers for class, majority of the time they will always be typed, which makes spelling one less thing to worry about. The involvement of Facebook and
