My Driving Test I immigrated to the United States from Vietnam. First, I lived in Olathe, a small city in Kansas for two years and then I moved to Oregon. Olathe is a small, quiet, and peaceful city. There is no public transportation around the city. Hence, it is very importance for everyone to have a driver's license. Having no driver's license is like having two legs but not the ability to walk . So the first goal of my new life was to try and get a driver license. I took a written test and got a driver permit five days after I came to the United States. I then started to learn how to drive a car every day from my husband. I practiced driving whenever we went out shopping or went to my husband's school. On the weekends, with my husband in the car, I drove around our neighborhood, our town, and some streets that my husband knew that I would drive during my driving test. My husband wanted me to be familiar with every stop sign, one-way, and two-way street. After two months of practicing driving, and some English that I learned in my country, I felt very confident to take the driving test. It was a very beautiful, sunny day in June 2003. My husband took me to the DMV around 10 AM, the perfect time for taking the driving test, traffic slight at this time. There were a few cars out on the roads where I was going to drive with an examiner. I did not have to worry about changing lanes. I was very confident at home, but I got a little bit nervous when I walked into the DMV office. Since it was a small town, drivers did not have to make an appointment for taking the test. They just walked in and waited for an available examiner. On this day, I saw two American examiners and a Mexican female examiner with an unhappy face in the office.
