“You’ll want all day to-morrow, I suppose?’ ‘If quite convenient, sir.’ ‘It’s not convenient, and its not fair.” From the way Scrooge is complaining to his clerk that ‘its not fair’ to have Christmas day off and to when he comprehends how bitter he was towards him, it is distinct that the Ghost of Christmas Past helped him come to this realization. As the novel progresses so does Scrooges’ quest to seek self-improvement.
“I had never realized what it means to destroy a healthy, conscious man” (16). Also, he describes the attitude and emotion of this Hindu man before he was hanged. “He walked clumsily with his arms, but quite steadily, with that bobbing muscles slid neatly into place, the lock of hair on his knees” (16). In “A Miserable Merry Christmas,” the author describes his own depressed mood about waiting anxiously for his Christmas present. “Though everybody knew what I wanted, I told them all again.
In Charles dickens novella, ‘A Christmas carol’ you see that the minor characters do in fact have the greatest impact on both the reader and the main character, Scrooge. Scrooge is an unlikable horrible character who has no sympathy for the poor but throughout the novel, you see Scrooge slowly start to change. Important messages through the novel are shown by the minor characters, this helps Scrooge finally see that money cannot buy you happiness and opens reader’s eyes up to the harsh reality going on in the industrial revolution. This suggests to readers that treating the poor in the way Scrooge has is wrong. Minor Characters like the portly gentlemen, Scrooges ex-fiancé, Bell and Fezziwig are a huge part of Scrooges Journey of becoming a better person.
At the beginning of this novel Adam comes off as an ignorant, foolish boy. Moses Cooper who is Adam’s father and himself seem to disagree on many things and not get along so well, partly because of this foolishness. Fast writes on page four, “I should have known enough to keep my mouth shut, because he replied that he was gratified to be enlightened and laid onto me ten times more, and then wanted to know whether I deemed seventeen to be a superstitious number?” This quote came right after the situation of Adam Cooper being caught by his father reciting a spell while fetching water. From this quote it is obvious that there is a lack of respect between Adam and his father. He continues to lash out on his disagreements with his father until he truly understands his father’s true feelings for him.
In the novella A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens the main focus is on the need of redemption of the central character, Ebenezer Scrooge. It is through the foolish beliefs that Scrooge learns a lesson to overcome the isolation from mankind. His journey to redemption came to event by the midnight visitations of the three spirits, his partner Jacob Marley had warned him about. In the beginning Scrooge is revealed as a cold, bitter man; "a tight fisted hand at the grindstone," giving the impression that he works hard and will do whatever to keep his money in his pocket. Dickens represents him like this so people who were and are like this would stop and think; possibly even feel the beginning of remorse.
By writing the book in the first person perspective you get an inside look of every detailed thought that runs through Christopher’s mind. The author develops a theme showing how poorly people can treat you just for being “different”. Throughout the book, Christopher endures multiple encounters with disrespectful and harsh people. On Christopher’s journey to his mother’s house, he asks the policemen a simple question, but because he lacks the intelligence that the policemen considers common sense, he receives a very disrespectful answer. “How much does it cost to get a ticket for a train to London?” And he said, “About 30 quid.” And I said, “Is that pounds?” And he said, “Christ alive.” And he laughed.
So he finds his real dad who’s name is Walter and he’s onw of those grumpy, workaholics that doesn’t really care about anything except making money. So Buddy acts like a 5 year old and is all “Yay, Christmas! Let’s scare people with how childlike I am and that I believe I’m from the North Pole even though normal people will think I belong in a mental hospital. But anyways, the whole movie is about how you need Christmas spirit and everything and that you should believe in Santa. So James Caan played Walter, the biological father of Buddy.
Assignment 1: Q1. THE CATCHER IN THE RYE After studying Holden’s actions throughout the novel The Catcher in the Rye, I believe he is incorrect in forming the belief that Mr. Antolini betrayed him. Holden jumps to the conclusion that Mr. Antolini is a “pervert” based on an incident where he wakes up in the middle of the night to find his old English teacher patting him on the head. This gesture, which appears perfectly platonic and fatherly, leads him to feel betrayed by one of the few people that he liked and trusted. It is clear that Holden misinterprets Mr Antolini’s action because of a number of factors, including his fascination with sex, his mistrusting, judgemental nature, the lack of affection in his life, his struggle with adolescence and his cynical outlook on adult life.
B 1. Larry talks like a man, “Next morning I woke at my usual hour, feeling like a bottle of champagne” (161). This’s so funny because Larry is a kid and he’s never drank alcohol, but he acted as if he has an experience about that. 2. When Larry gets mad at his parents, he said “they really made my blood boil” (164).
A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens Ebenezer Scrooge has one love, money. He loathes all things that bring cheer and happiness to others, so naturally, he despises the whole Christmas season. One Christmas Eve, Scrooge is visited by a deceased friend and partner, Jacob Marley. Marley has been dead for seven years and was just as selfish as Scrooge. As punishment his spirit is now forced to wander the Earth in chains, and he has come to warn Scrooge that the same fate waits him if he keeps living the way he has been.
