These stereotypes are what some people class teens into automatically without getting to know them and seeing what their capabilities are. This is very dangerous as if stereotypes are give then the person could see it as an excuse for his or her behavior. In reality a person could just be going through a hard time but in the eyes of others they are showing the characteristics of a particular stereotype. In the media today teens are portrayed in a negative manner for example in a lot of soaps like “Home & Away” there is a bad boy theme at times. This is shown through the introduction of the River Boys gang.
For example, kids view Latinos or Mexicans as boxers and Asians as martial artists or even as criminals. This gives them an image of a dominant man, power, and also control. Most of these stereotypes are learned by the kid by watching the different cartoons on the television, most of the time these cartoons portrays the caracteres with stereotypes. For example, girls as weak and boy as tougher and rude. Tough Guise is the first film I have ever viewed that made me realize that the role of being “masculine”for the boys , involved so much performance, image, and the role that they play.
Similarly, Clueless is not only an ‘affectionate spoof on self-absorbed teenagers’ but also a clever ‘dig’ at the society that created them. Heckerling presents her messages with not only the script to help her but techniques available to her medium including camera, music, design and acting. Due to the relatively short running time of films Heckerling cannot slowly and intricately build her characters the way in which Austen did, instead, the characters in Clueless are stereotypical. This allows the audience to understand and identify with each character from quite early
The Film we watched in class Tough Guise: Crisis in Masculinity, gave me a better idea of how the world and its peoples see these young men behind the mask showing their true colors. Showing their true colors meaning that they aren’t what they seem to be, as soon as the public has brutalized their mind they often set their plan for revenge. Setting their plan for revenge could include anything from the media giving a bad image of things to the students in schools bullying other children and running these young boys life into retaliation. This movie made me feel as if young boys who aren’t raised right or aren’t socially interacted with the other children are usually the ones to become outgoing into committing bad realities. Social interaction a very big part of any
Personal Essay: To Kill a Mockingbird There were many things that added to my understanding of the novel as a whole, both from the film and documentary. Some of the things I learned include the fact that at first, children were interested in learning but that degraded overtime. Secondly the intro represented an adult world in the eyes of children. Thirdly, through the film and documentary, the novel is about the imperfections in life and how people have learned from that. Through the film and much of the novel, the Finch children and Dill were eager to learn and discover new things which may have been a clear representation of children back then.
Jeffery McClendon Dr. Christopher Barry Reaction Paper 1 November 2011 Movies: Good for Portrayal and Useless for Informing Movies are undisputedly popular sources of entertainment that can sometimes flawlessly depict scenarios that we actually witness in real-life instances. The movies presented in class are particularly talented at mocking certain trends we see in adolescents. Collectively, my adolescent experiences, the concepts discussed in class and my analysis of Clueless, Coach Carter and Mean Girls have convinced me that all three movies do successfully meet the goal of portraying an accurate picture of adolescents in our culture; however, I am equally convinced that it is reasonable to argue that movies, though effective at realistically portraying issues and concepts involving adolescents, are not necessarily useful for informing the public about the issues faced by adolescents today. To begin with, many scenes in Clueless do an impressive job showcasing certain fundamental issues and concepts surrounding adolescents. For example, one scene in particular justly executes an authentic portrayal of how biological and cultural factors influence the social, cognitive and emotional components of adolescents, better known as “reciprocal causality”-- a premiere topic we discussed in lecture.
They have made bad decisions in their life and they are getting publicity out of it. Is this really the type of thing that you want your child to be looking up at? Seeing these popular movies, television and teen icons influences us to think that it is cool to be pregnant at a young age. The media is influencing us too much, we follow whatever the "trend" is and we don't think for ourselves. Casual naked people dancing around, thin and built models, and teen pregnancy is subconsciously affecting us to think all of this is okay.
The influence an environment has over growing adolescents will impact them. Also, easy access to firearms, violent video games, and aggressive music will furthermore add to how children and adolescents engage in certain types of behaviors that will lead them to performing a crime Culture plays a huge role on how our children in America are raised. Some parents tend to put restrictions when others try to discipline their children when they are doing something inappropriate, they have a tendency to get offended when others try to guide or correct them. My mentality on discipline is still old fashioned, if my child is doing something wrong, then by all means, take my child and correct them. It’s better to correct the issue when they are small than to repent later when it might be too and they might end up in
Crash The movie crash does a very good job exposing how common stereotyping people really is. Many people are affected by this every day. I really hope this movie helped people realize how much they affect people by what they say or how they act towards people just based off of stereotypes. Stereotyping is defined in our book as exaggerated generalizations associated with a categorizing system. Stereotypes may be based on a kernel of truth, but they go beyond the facts at hand and make claims that usually have no valid basis.
The story is based upon small conflicts who interweave into bigger conflicts when the story develops and the character are interwoven with each other. I also want to mention that if you read behind the lines, you will see that the main problem is racism, prejudice and fear for the unknown. “You think you know who you are. You have no idea.” This is a quote from the movie and I think it’s very good. The quote reflects some actions from the movie, because many of the characters are developing and find different aspects of them selves that they didn’t know about.
