At least 45 British ships arrived in the Lower New York Bay. Within the week, another group of about 130 ships arrived off Staten Island under the control of Admiral Richard General Howe, brother of General William General Howe, a man who did not agree in pursuing military confrontation with the colonists. By July 2d, British forces began to land at Staten Island. On July 6th, word reached New York and Washington that Congress had voted for independence just four days earlier. Immediately, Washington had brigades march onto the commons of the city to have the Declaration of Independence read aloud.
It was estimated that only about 1,000 were in-fact British deserters (“Impressment and Search”). In June of 1807, A British ship named Leopard approached the USS Chesapeake a few miles off the American coast and demanded to search the ship for British deserters. James Barron, the Commander of the Chesapeake, refused to allow the British to come aboard. The Leopard then opened fire, killing and wounding a number of men. The British sent a party
A few days before the sinking of the Lusitania, the German Embassy had released a statement that would warn travelers about the risk they would face when embarking on the voyage. Captain Schwieger, commander of the German U-20, claimed he had seen the passenger liner from a distance, giving the order to advance on the ship. German official’s claim that only one torpedo was fired upon the Lusitania, whilst the American and British personnel claim, that the second explosion was a second torpedo hitting the passenger liner. Captain Schwieger watched on through his periscope and observed the Lusitania; as it rolled to the starboard (right) side, and sank within 18 minutes. With a ‘cloud’ of war hanging over their heads, Sir Winston Churchill wanted to be prepared and made a decision to transform the passenger liner Lusitania into a ship that would meet the specifications of the British Admiralty.
At the same time General George McClellan and his Union Army were moving up the peninsula toward Richmond. Eventually the Federals made it to Norfolk, ending Davis’ trips to that city and Vifquain and his friends’ plot. The Frenchmen then worked on getting back to Washington to join the Union Army. The tanks were also unwieldy to use as they were prone to getting stuck in the mud and breakdown, as well as being short-ranged and slow, travelling only 10 kilometres per hour. These first tanks had not been tested in trench conditions and were not developed enough. Over a third of the shells used were duds and did not explode on impact. However, the tanks were useful in gaining land and were very effective against machine gun fire as the infantry could follow behind it using it as a shield against the bullets. Later, at the Battle of Cambrai, they were to be used to much greater effect.
