Socratic Dialogue Assignment Michelle Shams 500955349 JENNY: Andrea, I think I’m pregnant. ANDREA: What do you mean pregnant? You’re not fit to have a baby. JENNY: You think I don’t know that? I’m not old enough, I’m not emotionally or financially stable enough and to be honest I’m not even sure his dad will stay. ANDREA: And so what, you’re going to have an abortion? JENNY: Well what other choice do I have? ANDREA: Face the consequences of your actions, have the baby and raise it. JENNY: My parents are literally going to kill me. ANDREA: No they wont. You’ll get kicked out at worst. That’s still better than killing a child. JENNY: You can’t be serious. Have a little empathy! How am I supposed to provide for this child? ANDREA: Get a job JENNY: I have a job ANDREA: Get another JENNY: I came to you for real advice, not to get crucified. ANDREA: I’m just being a good friend, wouldn’t you rather I be honest than lie? JENNY: I can’t believe you. How are you sympathizing more with an unborn baby than with your best friend of 5 years? ANDREA: If everybody made the same awful decision and had an abortion if they felt parenthood was inconvenient then there wouldn't be any humans on earth. You are responsible for your choice. JENNY: I know I am responsible for my choices because I have the freedom to choose. This is my choice and it is specific to my situation and I do not oppose anyone who makes the same choice. ANDREA: Don't you believe in universal moral values? Don't you think you should be preserving life instead of taking it? JENNY: Sometimes you cannot make your choice based on universal moral values. ANDREA: You made a mistake and now you have to deal with the consequence. What if that baby grows up and becomes the next Einstein? What if it cures cancer? What if it becomes the next big popstar? What if you give birth to the next Beyonce?
