URBAN GROWTH AND DECLINE Where is it happening? Broken Hill Why there? Mining: The mining industry is what put BH on the map. Over 100 tears of constant mining has resulted in depleted resources.The prosperity of mining in BH hinges on several things. The strength of the Aussie dollar impacts on exporting, metal prices effect profits, and a slowdown in the global economy will reduce the demand (particularly from China) for the metal produced in BH. There are three very good recent examples that answer this question. 1.A very popular tourist mine that has seen thousands of visitors pass through was forced to close because an increase in mining activity made that area dangerous. This is a great example of the opinions of different groups. For the mining industry this was a sign that things were looking good. Whilst mining is the sole reason that BH exists, parts of the community would like to see operations closed down because of health issues (lead contamination, dust diseases etc). 3.Whilst mining is responsible for employing over 500 people in BH, there are also flow on effects to businesses that rely on the mine such as wholesalers and service providers. These businesses employ lots of people and rely on the mine. The opinions of these companies would differ with those of the residents that would rather see mining cease for environmental reasons. How do different groups (individual groups and government) respond to his issue? Government groups will provide support to the mining industry because mining provides so many jobs and has the flow on effects that will help to boost the local and national economy. This support can come from government funding and from legislation. Individual groups concerned with the environmental issues will band together and lobby government for tighter legislation on mining.
