Memorial Day is celebrated on the last Monday of May, and children all over the U.S. get to stay home. Some children stay home and play video games, while others gather with family and have celebrations and outings. Either way Memorial Day is a day of relaxation and joy to some, and to others a day of sorrow and mourning. But why are they mourning you may ask? Well, they are remembering the people that died in war fighting for our country, for Memorial Day is officially defined on Wikipedia.com as “a U.S. federal holiday wherein the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces are remembered.” Even though that is the technical definition, Memorial Day is also a day to celebrate not just the dead, but also the living who once were, or are, serving our country. In fact, memorial day was largely intended to thank living veterans for their loyal services. How would you feel if you were on the battlefield with guns blazing around you, and you’re living in just pure chaos? You put your life in the line of fire and hope that you don’t die, and you do this all because of pure love for your country. Now imagine coming back to normal everyday life, and no one even looks your way and you’re ignored. When there is Memorial Day, people that served never have to feel like this, so think about why Memorial Day is a National Holiday and remember all the people just like you or me that served and died for our sakes. Some people even consider them heroes and they have a right to. So respect them like others do with a few of these easy traditions: Put flags and flowers on the graves of men and women who died for our country Fly the U.S. flag at half-staff until noon Visit monuments for sailors, marines, and soldiers Participate in a National Moment of Remembrance at 3pm March in a
