January 13, 2011 Affairs of the Party i. Log Cabin Campaign * IN 1840 Martin Van Buran was the current president. The log cabin campaign was going on between him and William Harrison and John Tyler as his running mate and their rival Martin. * William Henry Harrison didn’t do much in the office because he died after getting into office. His running mate Tyler took his place. * The log cabin campaign- * The reason this campaign came was because a democratic editor tried to portray William Henry Harrison as unfit during the election. Once he was elected he took that portrayal as a source of pride. * The Whigs begin to attack the current president Martin van for having a failed presidency. It was a motivation for those women to lead the charge against this evil that is keeping the nation from moving to its fullest potential. It was a part in the book where a white woman asked how a slave woman can love their dirty little monsters just as I love my child. This line was meant to appeal to women because of course they know that slave women love their children just as much as they love theirs. It is painful to think that a child can be ripped from their mother’s breast. Frederick Douglas book was not as popular as Stowe’s book. The reason for it may have been because Stowe’s book came out after the Mexican War and it becomes more of an issue that was on peoples’ minds. Douglas talks in a more abstract form. People were more likely to read a book by a white middle class woman who had little contact with slaves than a black former slave. Many people did not believe Douglas book was written by a black man because it was so elegant and well written. Because of impossibility. Slavery was a big cause of the war because the institution was so important. It plays into all of the controversy. It was not the institution of slavery directly but the more abstract concept of slavery of enslavement. It was the fear help by America in the north and south that their own freedoms was endangered and they was about to be enslaved. The fact that slavery existed and it was an example what it meant to be a slave it gave those fears even more credible. The understanding of freedom was tied into how slavery existed as an institution. For all Americans it was the threat that their own independence would be denied and they didn’t want to live in this fear. This drove them to the war. People focused on the differences of North and South, in truth what produced the war was something that they both shared were a deep commitment was the freedom that they sought. It was a fear that their legacy was endangered. The Civil War was not wages between North and South but between America and the South or between America and the North. It was a conflict between American ideas. Those ideas needed to be brought out to the open and solved.
