Angela Gilbert Period 5 3-27-09 Macbeth vs. Lady Macbeth Both Macbeth and Lady Macbeth contribute to the murders of many innocent people. Both characters have a conscience but they also both have human desires and wants. Lady Macbeth, unlike Macbeth seems to be unable to repress her desire for her husband to become king. She is the one that started it all by convincing Macbeth to kill Duncan. Lady Macbeth is more devious than her husband because she originates the bad thoughts and by the end, Macbeth is just acting on impulse. “ Lady Macbeth and her husband are the original power couple. Lady Macbeth turns out to be a character no less complex than Macbeth, especially given her added dimension of having to relinquish her womanly nature. It’s pretty clear that, given her husband’s potential for greatness, she is willing to do whatever needs to be done to help him through it.”- shmoop Lady Macbeth goes from extremely powerful and confidant to being sick with guilt. In the beginning of the book she says things to Macbeth to make him do things he’s not comfortable with. “O, never shall sun that morrow see! Your face, my Thane, is as a book where men may read strange matters. To beguile the time, look like the time; bear welcome in your eye, your hand, your tounge; look like the innocent flower, but be the serpent under’t.”- Lady Macbeth At one point in time she was very devious but as time went on and her conscience got a hold of her, she was overcome by guilt. “The thane of Fife had a wife. Where is she now? What, will these hands ne’er be clean? No more o’ that! You mar all with this starting.” –Lady Macbeth For some reason Lady Macbeth was able to heartlessly kill innocent people.
