In Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, Mercutio views love as a joke while Friar Laurence's idea of love is more passionate. Love is shown as a vulgar item when seen through Mercutio's view. “Prick love for pricking, and you beat love down.” (Act I Scene IV) Mercutio believes that love is only about being sexual to one's partner.
“Reason versus passion” is one of the main pillars of the literary movement known as Neoclassicism and Racine’s Phaedra is one of the most famous and representative works that came out during this period (17th century and beginning of 18th) for it explains how love and passion can be dangerous for the life of human beings. The play shows evidence that Phaedra looses her reason when hit by Eros’ curse, and falls in love with Hippolytus, her stepson. When thinking ‘passionately’ she can’t see ‘the truth’, namely, that being in love with Theseus’ son is wrong. This unreciprocated love leads to Phaedra’s irrational behavior, such as to convince Oenone, her nurse, to accuse Hippolytus of abusing her, to prevent Theseus from finding out about her love for his son. This ultimately leads to Hippolytus’ death, because he doesn’t want to put shame on his father for having abused his wife.
He talks to himself about many things, but the main theme is theduality in any situation, meaning how something bad can so easily be turnedto good, and vice versa. While he seems to be focusing his entire speech tohimself on this idea, Friar Lawrence so easily contradicts it only a fewscenes later, when he marries Romeo and Juliet. By marrying the youngcouple, Friar Lawrence is not even following his own ideas, because eventhough marrying Romeo and Juliet is a good act, doing it so hastily makes it abad one. This ties in to another, closely related one of Friar Lawrence’sideas, which is that a good action done in a bad way can form a bad action, ashe says: “Virtue itself turns vice, being misapplied…” (II.ii.17). This againshows that the good act of marrying Romeo and Juliet, if done wrong bydoing it too quickly, can become bad act.

Critical Lens Love is irrational, love is oblivious, love is stupid and unknowing. People make uncharacteristic, unrealistic, and odd decisions when trapped in the cloudiness of love. They see only what they want to, that is why couples in love are commonly told to be blind. Geoffrey Chaucer once said “Love is Blind.” This quote explains how lovers do not think dearly and do absolutely stupid things when their love between one another, takes over. This unknowingness and unrealistic-ness is shown many times in different texts, including the romantic tragedy play, Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, and the short story “Scarlet Ibis,” by James Hurst.
Beatrice expresses her acceptance of Benedick’s love but does not realize the love inside Beatrice exists artificially. Beatrice’s faith in her emotions leaves her vulnerable to any criticism of her love to Benedick. For instance, when Hero commands Margaret to fetch Beatrice, Hero and Ursula purposely allow Beatrice to listen to them to invoke a stronger attraction in Beatrice towards Benedick. Shakespeare allows the first sign of the theme deception to manifests itself within Hero and Ursula’s conversation. Shakespeare aims to project a very harsh form of deception here in order to emphasize the power of deception of love.
Love In our world today, society tends to think of love as a “giddy, but passionate feeling for someone”; on the other hand, love has a far more meaning than just a feeling for someone. Love not only is a feeling, but a desire in which few people have. Not only do people try to force love, but often times lust is mistaken for love. Love does not come easy and few people actually know what “true love” is. An abstract emotion or feeling that is profoundly tender, passionate affection for another person is called love, or the dictionary version of it.
