All is fair in love and war is a popular saying that implies that anything and everything done in the name of love and war is justified. Based on the examples presented in An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge by Bierce, it is clear that whether moral or not, people accept the idea that all is considered fair in love and war. However, more thought should be given to this statement since all may not always be fair in love and war. Issues of truth and morality show that in the end, love must conquer war. People believe that all is fair in love and war and the soldiers in the story by Bierce demonstrate this when they trick the planter which ends up leading to his death. The soldiers do not care that the planter has a wife and children or that this trick would lead to his death. Morality is defined as the conformity to the rules of right conduct. However, in this story morality does not impact the soldiers because they are acting in the name of war. Morality is not considered in this story but it should be. The soldiers want to win the war but they should still consider what is moral and just. They did not have to trick a planter to win. But, the main character, a planter, finds out that this blind following leads to an end to love. In the end, the planter thinks about what is true and just, which is love for his wife and family.
