The Effects of Marijuana, And The Reason The Drug Is Illegal What do the long- term effects of marijuana have in common with the reason that the drug is illegal? Marijuana was one of the largest money producing crops for the founding fathers of the United States of America. Not only was the drug smoked, but it was also used to make paper, clothes, rope, and even sails for ships. So how did the marijuana go from being the largest cash crop that this nation was founded on, to being one of the most costly wars this country has ever seen. Relaxation is one that most people who use the drug comment on immediately; sleepiness is another effect of the drug. Dry, red, itchy eyes are some of the immediate negative effects of the drug along with short- term memory loss. The short- term memory loss, from what most people say, goes away after the other immediate effects go away. Laughter and happiness can be a positive effect as long as you are in a comfortable location, though when people are out of their comfort zone they have admitted anxiety problems like faster heart beat and paranoia. The most widely known use for medicinal marijuana is for treating the nausea symptoms in cancer chemotherapy patients. Marijuana is also used to treat the appetite loss symptoms in AIDS patients, and also the AIDS wasting syndrome. Glaucoma has also been treated by the use of marijuana because it lessens the pressure on the inner eye, which greatly reduces pain. Marijuana has also been found to be useful as an anti-depressant and works well against mood disorders. Another medicinal use of marijuana is for a non-addictive alternative to painkillers and sleeping pills. It has also been found to be useful to help fight multiple sclerosis. There are twelve states that have passed laws to allow the use of medicinal marijuana, AK, CA, CO, HI, ME, MT, NV, NM, OR, RI, VT, and WA some of these states even pushed the law through after governor veto’s. Most of the states have only approved the drug for specific uses, but California is the most well known because it can be prescribed for almost any problem your doctor feels it will help.
