Portfolio Task: Module 1 Effective Study Skills are the sole foundation for a solid education(540 words) Many academic students making the transition from normal studies and everyday life skills to studies for their chosen profession start to fall behind, this is because the study time increases along with independent working , this is due students not knowing how to approach the new demands (Gettinger & Seibert – 2002). In addition students do not know how to approach the new demands required for independent study.– Metacognition is the awareness of one’s own learning and thinking process, that enables each student to take responsibility for their learning, allowing them to set goals, self assess and implement, however the metacognition side is not taught in the early years. What a student perceives as study skills will depend on the individual, what is effective for one will not be for the other. Study skills are developed through frequent use and become a natural action; skilful reading develops by constant reading and writing by writing. As the mind becomes more fine tuned the student will realise they can apply more to analytical and critical thinking - “Constant practice and critical reflection is essential if the student wishes to succeed” (Cottrell, 2013 P66).
William Ashing Longoria WRC 1023.034 3 Mar. 2014 The Rising Costs of College: A Causal Analysis Thomas Billiterri, a writer at CQ Researcher which produeces educational research articles writes,"In-state tuition, fees and room and board at a public four-year college now average $15,213 per year." Today, college is considered the stepping stone to a better life for young adults around the world. The skills learned at a university will help people achieve their highest hopes and dreams, and most importantly help them to gain a high income level, The numbers don't lie, people with a bachelors degree make, on average, sixty three percent more than those with some college or an associate's degree and eighty three percent more than those
Although they may have the motivation and willingness to work hard, students often need practical help (161). Unfortunately, in this fast-paced society, there are consequences to dropping out of college (164). Leonhardt mentions how there are limited pay raises for those without college degrees (160). Also, not everyone has the opportunity to acquire a job that is usually only given to college graduates. Although non-graduates may live satisfying lives, many worry how long their prosperity will last (164).
It is increasingly affecting older folks that decide to go back to college. The current federal aid legislation designed to give student-loan borrowers some relief does not do enough to assist older people. “Delinquency rates among older borrowers have grown, from about 6 percent in 2004 to more than 12 percent last year, according to the Federal Reserve” (Patton). The increasing amount of borrowers, the rising tuition costs, the struggle to retire comfortably, and the struggle to find a stable job by all college graduates due to the recent recession should be reasons as to why there should be programs that assist elderly individuals with their student loans. Over the years the value of a college degree has drastically burgeoned.
The students are still being exposed to the working world at a very young age which can have its very own benefits. The teens learn responsibly the meaning of hard work, but there are demerits at the same time. Each year the acceptance process for college has been getting harder and harder, and when a teenager is forced to work through high school their grades are bound to suffer. Many of the teens working are coming from lower class families who are working to support themselves and save for college, this to mean that the fact that their grades are suffering from the work they are expected to do contradicts the whole reason of them working. It is actually hard for teens to balance their schoolwork social lives and a demanding job.
the time, money, and energy the NEA puts into issues like same sex marriage, abortions, homosexuality, womens rights, etctra, is excessive when we have students graduating who have great difficult with reading or struggle with basic math skills. the NEA's powerful hold on education today leaves them mostly responsible for the holes we have in our education. it is not only the faulty curriculum, but most importantly the failing teachers who the NEA hides, defends, supports, and so on; sticking by their constant cry of not enough pay, however is that an excuse to pass students who should have been held back years ago? the most disturbing problem with the NEA is when they brag about the success of their million dollar programs that are supposed to increase reading and writing skills, math skills, and overall education; the issue occurs when barely a quarter of students show positive results. how can anyone boast and petition funds for programs that are not
Try different calendaring systems and see which one is best. Always plan ahead on assignments and studies because then we will end up procrastinating and the results will not be good. Have some time for yourself to relax and go out with friends because college can be very exhausting and having some time for our mind to relax will be important. Once good time management skills are perfected college will not be so hard to complete. Calvo 2 Having good study skills is also very important to be a successful college student.
Say Hello to my Little Study Buddy Most adults will arguably tell someone college is ‘the time of your life’ but what they forget to mention is the hardships and stresses it actually brings. There is a whole new curriculum, much harder than a high school one, and for most people their first time living on their own. One must learn more material in a shorter length of time from difficult assignments that will require a majority of one’s leisure time. The harsh reality is that students without parental supervision will unfortunately want to waste their free time doing more entertaining things than cramming their brains with gratuitous amount of new statistics, formulas and information. Students will usually opt out of performing homework
Procrastinating is also a sign that the student does not take an interest in the subject or feel they do not need to put as much effort because they feel they are already educated enough to pull off the assignment in a short period of time leading to stress factors that also change the quality of the work. Stress, depression, internet, and lack of interest and study skills are the main
It is one thing to list the things that are required to be completed each day, but it is another thing to teach the best way to do those duties and even more on how a person in that position can offer a bigger value than just getting it done. The value comes from the small details that she can offer, such as proofreading your manager’s reports so he doesn't give the perception to his staff of being a poor writer. These smaller details can often times be bigger than the entire job description together. Toya could have helped in this interaction also in knowing she had areas of weakness she noticed in past positions she worked in. She also could have opened herself up to accept feedback in a positive way.
