At the art museum, Joseph M. Plavcan, Erie’s most famous artist, has many painting on display. Today I will be reviewing his piece Maple Tree. This piece of art can be found in the Erie Art Museum’s permanent collection at, 411 State street Erie PA. His gallery maybe found on the on the third floor of the Annex Building. Their hours are Tuesday through Thursday 11 am to 5 pm, Friday 11 am to 9 pm, Saturday 11 am to 5 pm, and Sunday 1 pm to 5 pm. The admission is members are free, adult’s seven dollars, senior’s citizens and students five dollars and children under five are free. The Maple Tree was painted in 1969 and is an acrylic based paint. This is one of Joseph’s last works. One if Joseph’s challenges were reducing the flat planes of the tree. According to www.erieartmuseum.org, he would flatten the foliage into large, hard-edged geometric forms, creating little abstraction within the larger composition. The geometrics softened the forms, lost their hand edges, and became expressionistic, approaching brighter-colored versions. The Maple Tree ties in with Plavcan’s later period of work. I like the color of Maple Tree because they are blended nicely and do not show contrast. I really like the colors Joseph used, purple, green and blue. Joseph used the purple for the stump and branches on the tree, and I think it makes the tree stand out. The colors blue and green are used for the sky and the ground. The texture of the painting conveys great depth. The foreground stands out but the background is also accessible for enjoyment. This allows the viewer of the painting to picture themselves at different depths of the experience. I believe the mood of the painting is relaxed. There are no sharp contrasts in the colors, shapes or sizes. All in all, I believe Maple Tree is a pretty straight forward view of the world through the eyes of Joseph
