CDS 213 Johnny Belinda Essay The deaf women in the movie faced many hardships. Belinda was called a dummy by everyone in town including her own father. She was worked to the bone on the farm she lived on and even though she was able to use symbols to communicate she was still thought to be incapable of being educated. I think this was an accurate portrayal of how people who had never been educated about deafness would respond to a deaf person. During this movie the main character Belinda was treated poorly by her family, disrespected by the town’s people, and even raped. The doctor that helped Belinda changed the way her family viewed her. He showed that just because she was deaf did not mean she could not be educated and communicate with the rest of the world. Many people are scared of different. They see someone who is not like them and assume that they are unequal. It only takes one person to help change the way people view others. After working with her for a while she was able to communicate with her hands, using sign language. This helped bring her and her father closer. When Belinda was on trial for the murder she was treated unjust. As she was on the witness stand people treated her as if she did not know what was going on. They had no sympathy that she was feel crazy emotions just like anyone else that had just seen, or been involved in a murder. They did not believe her story until I hearing person confirmed it. This was sad to me because it showed that if the hearing women did not stand up and tell the truth Belinda would have been sent to jail for murder. In our modern world I believe that many myths about deaf people still exist. Those who do not know about deaf culture can be intimidated. The more educated people become about deaf culture and deaf ways they will be able to learn that deaf people can live just like hearing people. Of
