Heart Breaking Murder A Girl Like Me: The Gwen Araujo Story, is an incredible film based off a true story. This story is about a girl named Gwen Araujo, who was born as Edward Araujo Jr. Growing up Gwen knew something was different as she was a boy, but she liked to wear heels, dress up and put on makeup. Her family had a hard time accepting the fact that she wanted to be a girl and wanted to be called Gwen. She kept it a secret that she had male genitalia and was murdered by four men when they found out. These four men suffer from transphobia, which is the fear of a transgender individual. The movie shows the murder trials and the life Gwen lived of constantly being ridiculed and picked on for expressing who she was. Not only did Gwen’s fellow classmates, family and other individuals in society have a problem with how she expressed herself, but she often felt as though there was something wrong with her. These are direct quotes in the movie between Gwen and her mother: Gwen/ Eddie: I hate my life mom, I hate it every single day! Sylvia: Don’t say that. Gwen/ Eddie: It is known to society that one can be born male or female, but their gender can be the opposite of their sex. This was the case with Gwen. This story greatly impacted my life because not only do I believe in equal rights; for every person is equal, but I have been ridiculed for my similar life choices. I am not a transgender, but I am a gay single mother. I have been told by numerous people I’m not leading a good life for my son or I am going to damage him for the rest of his life. My situation is very different than Gwen’s but her story taught me something. Her situation was a lot worse than mine, more people were not accepting of the fact that she was transgender. Her story taught me that if she could deal with the cruel world being a transgender, I can endure the world as a single lesbian
