David Midyan 2 TIEAC paragraphs (Novel: Speak) In the beginning of the novel, Melinda is depressed. She is often alone and quiet, because she called the cops at the party. Even her ex-best friends don’t want to talk to talk to her because of that. For example, in “Spotlight” Melinda thinks, “Nobody really wants to hear what you have to say” (9 page). She thinks of that, because she realizes that others remember what happened at the party.
Even if Joe was not there waiting for her, the change was bound to do her good” (Hurston, 32). In her second marriage to Joe, Jeannie finally begins to stand up for herself and find her voice. Her husband for years stifled and belittled her. Joe believed that his wife should not speak publicly, which he scolded her for several times during their marriage. When she couldn’t find a receipt for a shipment Joe made the comment.
She wants her sons father to rekindle their relationship and for them to be a family. She also wants to start taking classes at a community college but her mother or boyfriend are not supportive of her doing so. Jenna does not trust leaving her son with her boyfriend because he really does not spend any time with him or seem to be concerned with him. Her boyfriend only is concerned with Jenna taking care of his needs by cleaning and cooking. Jenna’s mother and her get into arguments over Jenna asking her mother to watch her son.
Miss Schwartz only thinks about making other people happy, because she is afraid of them becoming angry, or leaving. The first line of the story says, “For fifteen years Miss Schwartz had waited for Sam Hilton to get a job so they could get married. “ Lena wanted to get married before, but she would not rush Sam into finding a job. She wasted away her youth waiting for her fiancé to stop being lazy , and now Miss Schwartz is viewed as an old maid at the age of thirty-two. Even with complete strangers Miss Schwartz is being taken advantage of.
Her coworkers and boyfriend, however, never take the time to talk to the fat man, so all they can talk about is how huge he is. Without her working that particular night, waiting on that exact table, and meeting the fat man, she may otherwise stay in an unhappy and unhealthy relationship. By her feeling that her life is going to change, one may think she is going to leave Rudy and quit her job to start over. The setting of the story helps her in her transformation into something new. Her coworkers’ and boyfriend’s point of view also help her in her new found transformation.
The reason he doesn’t go is because that is the day he visits his mother in the home she lives in, and she would never understand if he changed the day and would pick on him even more than usual. He would love to go out with them on another night but fear that, if he asks, they will say no. He would love the manager’s job because then his mother would see him as more successful and maybe give him more respect. He has a sort of girlfriend whom he would like to marry but feels he does not have much to offer her at present and anyway she might say ‘no’. He comes across as a gentle man who is very aware of the feelings of others and afraid of what they might think of him.
Of course there going to convince him that they are different and have many qualities to be considered “Mrs. Right.” There are many clues to know if he’s Mr. Bachelor, like for example, if he doesn’t introduce you to his friends or family, which means he’s in no hurry to fully integrate you into his life. But the biggest giveaway is that his last significant relationship was way back and every relationship since has lasted only a few months at most. Around the time the women are expecting the relationship to shift into a serious one, instead he’s putting it in reverse.
She is caught in the middle of a decision to help a friend or keep a secret, a secret in which her company expects her to keep. If she tells Evelyn, her friend, that her nephew Steve might not have a job in a few weeks, she is breaking company policy. If she doesn’t, Evelyn’s nephew Steve could get in over his head with a mortgage for his new house. Jan is torn; she has to think of a way to do right by both her friend, and her company. Jan has been a great friend to Evelyn, and she does not want to ruin that friendship.
