One of the concepts of naturalism that appears in the Call of the Wild is survival of the fittest. Survival of the fittest means that individuals who are mentally and physically strong will outlast those who are not. When Buck arrives in the north he has to learn to adapt to his new environment to survive. Buck steals whole chunk of bacon and gets away with it. After it says in the story, “this first theft marked Buck as fit to survive in the hostile, Northland environment” (London13).
Actions of Arrogance A Critical Review of INTO THE WILD By: Jon Krakauer (First Anchor Books 1997) Nicole Niesen Instructor Aamot Eng122/Fall 2012 The young and wild hearted Chris McCandless was very fulfilled with his odyssey to Alaska and was satisfied with his journey, in Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer. McCandless met a lot of people along his journey, who gave their various opinions about his choices and death later on. One viewpoint is his beliefs in Tolstoy and Thoreau made a grave impact on his actions. Another viewpoint is he was an adventurous male who made decisions that were spontaneous and did not want to conform to the domestication of society. What was perhaps a more significant perspective of Chris McCandless was the arrogance he had that caused him to suffer a frozen death, which was led on by being ill prepared and having actions of ignorance.
Kietrich Griffin September 4, 2012 Period 4 The average man is not willing to take total responsibility for himself because being free means that you are no longer under control and no longer have anyone else to help keep your life within a safe standard of living. Therefore, being free is something that our societies does not want because that would mean we would have to be responsible and most people today in this society have no concept of what being responsible truly is. Also, the society is afraid of being free due to the fact that to be free we would need to be free from the obligations of a job, a family, ect... and a job is what will help pay for their bills and the house that they live under, which brings safety. The quote is basically stating that, the average man would rather have the restriction of laws and be safe then to allow people to do whatever they wish. Therefore, Mencken’s observation does indeed apply to contemporary society because the majority of the society agree that the laws are here to keep us safe, not to restrict us and the reason for that is due to the reason that people feel that without laws, which would be true freedom, many would do things that would be illegal and deadly in our everyday life such as murder or robbery.
Chessman gives good insight of how Roosevelt was eager and anxious to get into war with Spain. Chessman also shows Roosevelt’s aggressive mind when it comes to foreign and domestic policies when Roosevelt says, “I always hate words unless they mean blows” (p.67). This is an important concept Chessman shows because it creates the character of Roosevelt being very aggressive and to the point. Something that was disappointing in chapter five was that Chessman hardly talked about Roosevelt winning the Noble Peace Prize (p.126). Chessman sometimes spoke about what seemed like unimportant events throughout Roosevelt’s life, for example, his cattle ranch in the Dakota Territory.
Many times, tragic flaws cause the tragic heroes to die or face downfall and Okonkwo’s case was not any different. He never wanted to end up like his father who died a shameful death, but ironically, he kills himself and “will be buried like a dog” (191, ch.25). Things Fall Apart meets certain criteria to be considered a tragedy. Just like many other tragedies, the main character Okonkwo, who had to face an unfortunate ending, was a good person and did not mean harm to anyone. All he wanted to do was to be successful to serve his ancestors and for his children to be successful as well and have good lives.
A day in life of Alex Sandler 1. How would you describe Alex's leadership style (according to “Leadership Run Amok”)? What are the advantages/disadvantages of Alex's style? Alex´s leadership style is only oriented in objectives, therefore that kind of style could be useful in a situation of confusion or when it needs to deliver a strong performance. Nevertheless, could be really unsocial and unsustainable when it has to work in stable situation, because mainly his peers and subordinates they will not accept or tolerate that style for long periods of time.
Imelda Daniel Mooneyham/3 September 28, 2012 Character is usually reflected by the way one reacts or acts upon a certain situation. Pride and ignorance can affect ones fate and get them into sticky situations, where instinct may become the best choice. With no imagination and miles of snow, one can lose patience and end up giving in just as the man did in “To build a fire” by Jack London. The man was so sure he could survive the extraordinary temperatures of Alaska, but ends up dead at the story’s end. The man was also warned at the beginning of the story, that when it gets too cold, one must be accompanied with a partner.
Because we are only human, we tend to make mistakes more often than not, and because we make those mistakes, it is hardly impossible to argue that humans are good. From a very young age, our parents work hard to teach us to share our toys and to play nice with our peers, but what some don’t realize is that if our parents weren’t around to teach us that, we would never learn, and eventually grow up to be unapologetically bad. This is because it is part of human nature to keep the best for ourselves, and to keep others away from what we feel is ours. Humans are not born with the ability to want to automatically share what is theirs, and this only adds to my point of view that much more. Cabrales 2 The only reason that the world is able to function correctly, the way it has for an extremely long time, is because of the laws that have come to surface in order to keep us in line.
“The Hiking Trip” Analysis In the short story “The Hiking Trip,” the protagonist, Jeff, has to leave the canyon without his dad, in order to find help for his injured brother, Mark. Jeff is courageous and loving, and his true self is shown by his actions throughout the story. By the end Jeff finds his strength, he finds that love can give you courage. In the beginning, Jeff acts childish and frightened. For example, he says,”I never wanted to come on this stupid old hiking trip!” This shows that he is immature because he is complaining about the trip while Mark is badly injured and in need of assistance.
These people have the right to accept this and other people believe that they can change their perspective of life. There could be a reason someone believes that there life should be different and some just no longer want their life to go on like in Hamlets Soliloquy. Hamlet did not know whether his life was worth living because it was so difficult and he was either going to fight for what he loved or he could have just gave up and let his uncle win. These are always thoughts that go through even the happiest people’s thoughts. Even though someone might be happy or look happy doesn’t mean that they have never thought that life might not be worth living.
