Latino Studies 102 Research Paper Illegal immigration effect on Latinos in the U.S. United States immigration has always been a popular topic, however, ever since the early to mid 1900s the immigration flow has been astronomical. The term “illegal immigration” refers to a person who has entered a country without legal authorization. This paper will show the relevance of illegal immigration into the U.S. and the effect it has on the Latino’s in the Unites States. The Latino population is made up of different countries, cultures, and varieties. The pattern of migration has been from Latino countries such as El Salvador, Argentina, Spain, and Columbia. The illegal immigrants that are of Latino decent usually cross the Mexican border into Arizona, Texas, or New Mexico. They usually come across with help of a smuggler, or also known as a coyote. A coyote’s main duty is to help illegal immigrants cross through land or waters, and travel into the desired country. They usually receive payment upon arrival by family members that are waiting. Smugglers can be held accountable for around 70 to 80 percent of the Latino population that comes across from Mexico, which adds a spike to the US population. Most of the immigrants that cross into the United States by use of a coyote cross through Mexico, which does not mean that all immigrants that come from Mexico are of Mexican decent. There is a large group of Latino immigrants that cross through Mexico into the U.S. from countries like Argentina, Columbia and Brazil. The illegal immigrants coming into the U.S. from places like Mexico, El Salvador, and other Latino countries have made it a difficult for the other Latinos in the U.S. to have success in our education system. According to Robert Corwin, a professor at Ohio State University, “By some estimates, up to two-thirds of California’s foreign-born workers do not have a high school diploma, and only 57% of Latino ninth-graders will graduate in four years, compared to 81% of white students” (Impact of illegal immigration on the U.S. social structure). Most schooling programs in Latino populated districts are packed full of students in the classroom. The result of this is schools with a low value of education, which proves to be a less efficient way of teaching students and gives way to a system of disorder. Statistics show that the overall graduation rate of the Latinos is only around twenty percent, which makes it nearly impossible for Latinos to make it in higher education. There have been laws passed that make it difficult for a legal Hispanic to attend adult classes, receive grants, and loans. Arizona Universities, for example, have made it a law that Latinos have to provide self disclosure of whether they are legal citizens or not. This robs the funds of the education process and puts them into programs that are used to verify citizenship. As a whole the western states make up around 80 percent
