When Maggie Glenn, an upstate South Carolina photographer, takes an almost propagandist picture of Mr. Kowalsky looking sad staring at the river of where his passed daughter rests this story picks up fire and politicians from the surrounding area get involved to help get this man’s daughter out of the river, which maddens the locals who would not like to see the only free flowing river in the state be tampered with. Installing a temporary dam in the Tamassee River to retrieve the body of twelve year old Ruth Kowalsky seems like a good, safe way to securely recover this little girl’s body, but the law clearly states “certain selected rivers of the Nation which, with their immediate environments, possess outstandingly remarkable scenic, recreational, geologic, fish and wildlife, historic, cultural, or other similar values, shall be preserved in free-flowing condition, and that they and their immediate environments shall be protected for the benefit and enjoyment of present and future generations.” Then it states “alteration of modification of the streambed will not

In the book, A Long Way From Chicago, many types of witty, or humorous, dialogue are used. When Grandma Dowdel takes the kids fishing, Joey says Grandma worked as “busy as a bird dog.” This is one of Grandma's favorite sayings. During the middle of the book, Mrs. Eubanks finds out that her daughter is somewhere inside the Dowdel house. When she comes to find her daughter, Grandma threatens her by saying, “if you set foot over that doorsill, I'll wring your red neck.” Mrs. Eubanks took her warning seriously and remained outside. When preparing for the Centennial Celebration, Joey is forced to wear Grandpa Dowdels wedding tuxedo.

Readers Response 3 This story was about two people, Liam and Gabriella, who were in a relationship with ups and downs. They decided to go to the lake for the weekend to spend time together, but when they got in an argument, Gabriella stormed out and something bad happened. Liam ran after her and when he ran into a bear, he got scared and ran away so was therefore attacked by the monstrous animal. In the end, Gabriella visited Liam everyday in the hospital and said she would always be with him, even if it was not for the better or what she wanted. There are many conflicts in this story, including person vs. person because they have conflict over the commitment of their relationship.
Accepting mortality as an inevitable part of life is an obstacle that every must undertake at some time in his or her life. Author E.B. White encounters such a struggle in his essay “Once More to the Lake”, in which he recalls taking his son to a lake retreat in Maine that his father took him to every first week of August in his youth. During the trip, White sees the lake through his son’s eyes but notices variations in the environment as a result of time. He begins to feel more like his father as he watches his son, but has trouble accepting that he, just like the lake, is changing and aging as time passes on.
