ICE BREAK “Earlier, Dad had asked mom to come. Mom said no. She was doing some work, some financial stuff she needed to catch up on. She´d already told him it was late in the season, the ice might not be good.” (P. 1 ll. 11-14) Relationships are difficult to comprehend when you are a child and even within a family, there are complex situations, which can be difficult to interpret. The short story Ice Break written by Astrid Blodgett from 2012 illustrates this. It’s about the girl Dawn, and her two sisters Marla and Janie. The two girls Dawn and Janie are going on a fishing trip with their father. They have to break a hole in the ice in the lake. The mom’s first feeling when asked about the ice-fishing trip is that it’s to late in the season to go ice fishing. However she ignores the alarms clocks, after the father says, he knows what he is doing. To make his point, the father says that he and Uncle Rick has been doing it for years, using Uncle Rick, to prove his point. The Mom then says, “I know how much you love it” (P. 1 l. 17) She even asks him to take Dawn with him. While they are driving around on the lake, looking for Uncle Rick, the ice breaks under them, and the car goes straight into the water. The father desperately tries to save both of his daughters, but he and Janie doesn’t make it out of the car in time and they drown. At the funeral, Dawn is confused of what’s going on, while her mother seems calm, she is crushed inside. The story is told by Dawn, a first person narrator. We see the story from her point of view. She is going on a fishing trip with her dad, but doesn’t like spending alone time with him “I didn´t want to be alone with Dad … he never knew what to talk about with me so it was uncomfortable for me” (P. 3 ll. 21-24). Since she doesn’t want to be alone, she asks Janie if she wants to join them, and offers her 5
