Running Head: International Union International Union of Painters and Allied Trades HRM 531 November 14, 2011 Unions represent millions of workers around the world today. As is the case with any business unit, there are many advantages to being a part of a union represented company. Federal, state, and local laws must be followed or litigation could ensue. The unionization process and bargaining units help ensure that employees will be fairly and equally represented. Background Information The International Union of Painters and Allied Trades, or IUPAT, is unionized. Currently, they represent 160,000 men and women in the United States and Canada. According to the IUPAT website, “members work in the Finishing Trades as industrial and commercial painters, drywall finishers, wall coverers, glaziers, glass workers, floor covering installers, sign makers, display workers, convention and show decorators and in many more exciting occupations” (pp. 1). However, the majority of the bargaining unit must agree for the development to take place. Cascio states, “The size of the bargaining unit is critical for both union and employer because it is strongly related to the outcome of the representation election” (p. 518). Union bargaining can effect an organization based on the number of electors within the union. Using a system known as a card check allows workers to petition the National Labor Relations Board, or NLRB, for a representation election if they receive 30 percent of employee votes. Elections are a major part of union organizations today. The NLRB supervises union organizing campaigns and representation elections. According to Cascio, “Collective bargaining is the cornerstone of the U.S. labor movement, and anything that threatens its continued viability will be resisted vigorously by organized labor” (p. 537).
