A pilgrimage could be said be an adventure taken to arouse you anyway that is possible. Many have begun to believe that the thought of a pilgrimage has changed over time. This is true because during the middle age a pilgrimage was made for religious purposes, although now in modern times a pilgrimage can be made for many other reasons such as spiritual or self improvement. In the middle ages the purpose of going on pilgrimage was for a spiritual reason such as in The Canterbury Tales. They were going to visit shrines in distant holy lands and to Canterbury to visit the relics of Saint Thomas Becket in Canterbury Cathedral. They saw a pilgrimage as a physical journey to a holy were expected to go on these pilgrimages. During this time pilgrimages were dangerous because there was less technology then now. So there was no way to predict what the weather may be. You could not contact anyone back home during this time so if there was an emergency or assistance needed there was nothing to be done. Pilgrimages is a choice either you can choose to go or no in modern day. As mentioned in The Road Not Taken, Yes there are still some religious pilgrimages but it’s more likely for a person to go on a secular pilgrimage. A secular pilgrimage is any type of journey that adds a piece to your life’s puzzle. This could be anything such as climbing a mountain, or any type of adventure. In The Way there were people taken journeys to quit smoking and to lose weight these were for self-improvement. Also the main character was taken the pilgrimage for a spiritual connection with his decent son. These were big changes in pilgrimages from the middle ages. Also technology has advanced so you may have GPS, phones and the weather is more predictable then in the middle ages.
