Pride vs. Wealth As Latter Day Saints we are told that we should look to the Book of Mormon for answers to our prayers, for guidance during hard times, and as a guideline to follow as we try to live our lives. However, stories and teachings in the Book of Mormon are sometimes hard to understand and interpret. Take Alma 39:14 for example. It says “seek not after riches nor the vain things of the world.” Does this mean we shouldn’t try to get a good paying job that will allow us to live comfortably and with leftover money to spend on trips with our families, or to get a better car? This same teaching comes up multiple times throughout the scriptures, found not only in the Book of Mormon but throughout the New Testament as well. These scriptures do state…show more content…
In regards to wealth it says “and the wise, and the learned, and they that are rich, WHO ARE PUFFED UP because of their learning, and their wisdom, and their riches…” This scripture is stating that having wealth isn’t bad, but the pride that comes with it is! We know from scriptures and revelation that our Heavenly Father wants us to learn and become wise just as he is and wouldn’t put this doctrine in the Book of Mormon to deter us from it. It is a warning that these, as well as riches, lead to pride. We know that pride is bad and we have seen it over and over in the stories of the Nephites and Lamanites. Nothing good comes of pride… ever! This scripture is there to warn us about the dangers of it and to help us realize that with success we need to be careful. This scripture, just like Alma 34:19, may throw some people for a loop when skimming over the verses, or reading it late at night, but we must analyze and carefully read scriptures like this to get the true meaning of them.
