Introduction/Background In today’s society, the realities of the virtual world and the real world have merged. With increasing innovations in technology, the virtual world has become the new and popular space to conduct businesses, network and even dating. Some people are even getting married online, using websites such as Second Life to do so. Technology can impact real world relationships, both negatively and positively, and the divide between the virtual world and the real world is narrowing. Understanding how to best use both the real world and the virtual landscape could help strengthen our current relationships, whilst paving the way for new ones.

Syed Hamza Amir 1 Professor Meredith Allison English 1303 23 September 2010 The Future of the Internet As our web experience continues to evolve at an exponential rate, it has provided us with more technology to publish our own content that had once been available only to the few. This rapid expansion in the ability of humans to publish new content has created a new flurry of debate over whether this is enhancing or destroying our culture. Two authors, Andrew Keen and Clay Shirky, tackle this issue with two very different conclusions. Keen provides valid points but falls short and seems like a hypocrite in his condemnation of web 2.0. On the other hand, Shirky gives a complete and thorough view in favor of our ability to publish
Pop culture very much exemplifies the language of my generation. As this is the language of my generation, communication that is couched in this obviously would have more meaning to me and impact on me. According to Eriksonian principles, teenagers need to explore and experiment with the world around them in order to understand the self in relation to that world. Successful identity formation depends on an individual’s ability to resolve issues involving relationships, popular culture, religion, political views, education, sexuality, substance abuse, rebellion, and career choices. The quotation by Paglia - in contrast to the work by Erikson as quoted above - suggests that popular culture produces a certain type of individual who develops a pseudo-identity reinforced by pop culture rather than a unique identity.
I have learned how to evaluate these sources effectively in order for them to support my work. Knowing the motive behind the page and its information will help me judge the credibility of its content in the future. I now know how important it is to use the same evaluation techniques for internet sources as I would for a book or journal article. I have discovered the importance of acknowledging the work of others, and now have a clear understanding of how an online source is used, whether it be scholarly or non scholarly. I now have more confidence in terms of using online literature as a part of an assessment.
