Assignment #1 Rebecca Rioux 4766440 ENGL 1F95 Thursday, October 25th 2012 Word Count:1002 Elizabeth Browing represents a love that is selfless and creates a sonnet of imagery for the reader, as well as utilizing the aspects of that which is a sonnet itself. To love is to know that one does exist; in the sonnet, love seems to be the entirety. Love is a term which is known questionably, all may not have experienced it but know of it. A poem of love, is easily related to identifying ones self. Browing identifies herself through this poem by asking the perpetual question of “How Do I Love Thee?” Although she gives no detail as to whom she may love, it gives the reader a chance to relate to her writing. She uses this sonnet to try and express the ways in which she loves thee. This sonnet includes many formal attributes, and the ones they do include affect the overall outcome of her writing. The things in which are apparent are features, theme and sonnet form. Browing presents her poem in first person, making it clearly connected to her directly. She uses I and my, making it personal giving the sonnet a sense of identification. When looking at the sonnet strictly on a feature basis, it is seen that there is rhythm, a stanzaic pattern, imagery, connotation, style etc… these are presented in different ways throughout the sonnet, for example when speaking of the rhythm it follows a pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables. The stressed syllables being the important, and most effective ones. Instead of using synonyms for the amount of times she put love into the sonnet, with the repetitiveness it is clear the kind of message she was trying to put across.
