Literary criticism theories such as Marxism, feminism, new historicist and many more, helps the reader to interpret and understand the text. New Historic theory is used to look at the history of the poet and the critic itself to understand the meaning behind the poem. Tragic love is the theme of the poem, and it shows the reader that love was not fulfilled between the two people. One did not accept the love of another. One can consider that “She was too kind” is the greatest poem ever because when one understand the history of the poem between the poet and Eliza, it can be determined that the poet used imagery, repetition and alliteration to convey the tragic love between Miss Savage and the poet himself.
The beloved in Sonnet 130 is described in an unappealing manner, and yet, because of his honest depiction of her the poet-speaker considers his love to be true. The sonnet suggests true, authentic feelings can only be expressed when traditional conventions are set aside. This essay will examine the various technical features used by Shakespeare to emphasise this theme. The discussion will also consider the context in which the sonnet was written. It is immediately clear that Sonnet 130 challenges traditional concepts of romantic love.
In John Donne’s “The Canonization” love is connected with metaphor after metaphor to explain the speakers need to love over everything else. The human body may be something fleeting, but the feelings in the human heart and mind never die. This love can be continued on like the lives of saints or a poem that is still being read today. As the poem begins, it is clear that the speaker is addressing someone who is in argument over his love affair. In Donne’s first lines, “FOR God's sake hold your tongue, and let me love; or chide my palsy, or my gout;”He begins by trying to persuade the reader to disapprove or make fun of his shortcomings, instead of his affection.
The title helps her travel to the central idea and immediately the reader knows what the poem will be about. The title is also what makes a reader decide to engage in the poem, making it obvious that the work is targeted toward women. The reader later finds that the title is only a generalization of a more narrowed topic. So, what men are Angelou referring to? In lines 3 and 4 she says, Wino men, old men.
It is clear appearance isn’t everything. In Sonnet 18 the speaker says that as long as the poem is still being read then the beauty of it still lives, which shows that poetry can preserve love and is immortal. Sonnet 147 is a poem that’s starts describing a beautiful person but ends but saying that she is basically the devil. This supports the poem’s theme: appearances isn’t everything. The speaker was deceived buy her beauty and soon came to realize that one doesn’t just judge someone by someone’s beauty and that person’s personality counts too.
American poet Emily Dickinson portrays her perception of belonging in her texts, through the thorough use of literary devices. From studying her work, we can gather and conclude that the sense of belonging is in fact, a fundamental aspect of human nature. It is in our nature to seek for a sense of belonging, as it is the sense of belonging that bridges the gulf between isolation and intimacy in all human relations. Emily Dickinson’s poetry reveals that she felt a sense of isolation, due to the fact that she didn’t belong in society. In the opening lines, “This is my letter to the world/that never wrote to me” of her poem “This is my letter to the world”, she expresses her view on her place in society.

Chuyen Le English 101 Professor Lynn Hodev 06/10/2015 Poetry has been used to express ideas and feelings in the indirect way that is fully know by the poet. However, it is hard for readers to understand those ideas and feelings unless he or she analyzes it intensively. When we analyze poems, we want to find out what meanings, emotions or feelings that poets want to convey to readers. Sylvia Plath is a very emotional writer, and her poem “Daddy” displays a very complex set of emotions. “Plath also uses her writing to unleash her personal feelings, and her signature of describing her life through her work in a way that is not biographical” (Moore , 2008).
Keats has grown as an individual in his past life until he met his love, which led to the creation of his most popular odes. Beck had stated “to write something which is an entity in its self which all the meaning can be found by simply exploring the way words were in the poem” this is shown through Keats’ poems with the word ‘love’ in both La Belle Dame Sans Merci and Ode on a Grecian Urn. ‘And sure in language strange she said - I love thee true’ the effects of this line is to exemplify the differences of love. A language barrier does not stop the illusion of love, seduction and emotion involved. The repetition of the word ‘never, never’ in ‘Bold Lover, never, never canst thou kiss’ emphasizes the idea of reoccurring love that is constantly chasing.
The poet is trying to be honest on the issue about love. She wants to tell the reader what her definition of love is, she does not want to lie and pretend that she sees nothing, like what many people did, escaping from the reality. However, the word “trying” shows us that it is impossible to be completely truthful; she is just trying to be honest. The poem is stanzaic but it is not in the standard format with four or six lines in each stanza and having regular number of words in each line. It is set up in an eye-catching way.
