SOCH111- HISTORY OF HEALING ASSESSMENT 1 – WRITTEN ESSAY Naturopathy, whole healing system, is a holistic system of medicine based, which is to find the reason of disease and to treat the disease in a natural way. (Ehrlich, 2011) Naturopathy translates as “nature disease” from Greek and Latin. Naturopathy has a variety of modalities such as nutrition, herbal medicine, homeopathy, remedial massage, and so on. (Wikipedia The Free Encyclopedia, 2013) Iridology is a modality of naturopathy that uses a technique to analyse the structure of the iris of the eye, which is a portion of the colour in the eye. (Jensen 1980, p2) This essay compares whole Healing system, Naturopathy and modality, Iridology considering when and by who were they invented, how have the therapies changed over time, what philosophies do they have about healing, how do they define the terms ‘health’ and ‘ disease’ and how whole healing system and modality are similar. Hippocrates, the ancient Greek “Father of Medicine” is the first advocate of Naturopathic medicine yet the term Naturopathy was coined in 1895 by John scheel. Then Benedict Lust, the father of U.S. Naturopathy purchased the term. (Wikipedia The Free Encyclopedia, 2013) The Lust, a German immigrant brought Naturopathy to United States in 1902 and founded a school of Naturopathy. Before Benjamin Lust, a form of Naturopathy also can go back to 18th and 19th century. At that time, Natural healing system such included hydrotherapy, which was popular in Germany and nature cure was developed in Austria. (Ehrlich, 2011) A young Hungarian boy named, Ignatz von Prezley, invented iridology in the early 1800s. When he was 11 year old, he caught an owl and accidently he broke the owl’s leg. At that moment, he glared the owl’s eye and observed an iris of the owl. Young boy, Ignatz von Prezley nursed the owl back to health then he had a chance
