1.1 DEFINE THE TERM MANUAL HANDLING (REFERENCE: OWN/LIBRARY) The term manual handling simply means moving and supporting a load by a person’s hands or arms, or by some or by some other form of bodily effort. In the care setting, handling of individuals includes the use of force by a person to lift, lower, push, carry, move, support and hold individuals. Last week, I supported and assisted a service user to use the toilet by pushing his wheelchair. 1.2 DESCRIBE THE FOLLOWING TERMS IN RELATION TO MOVING AND ASSISTING INDIVIDUALS: (REFERENCE: OWN/LIBRARY/ASCENTIS) RISK Risk can be described as the probability that a hazard will turn into a disaster. Last week, when I moved and assisted a service user to use the toilet, I ensured the way was free of any hindrances and objects that might cause the service user to fall. HAZARDS Hazard can be described as anything that has a potential to cause harm. A couple of days ago, when I moved and assisted Mrs. M, (a service user) to have her bath, I ensured the bathroom is free from any hazard such as slippery floor, sharps that might cause her to slip and get injured. RISK ASSESSMENT This can be described as the systematic process of evaluating the potential risks that may be involved in an activity or undertaking. When I took charge of caring for Mr. K, I identified all the hazards, evaluated them and found appropriate ways to eliminate or control them. CARE PLAN This can simply be described as an agreement on how identified needs will be met. When Mrs. P arrived at the care home, I read her care plan carefully and in moving and assisting her I applied exactly what I read in her care plan. ERGONOMIC APPROACH This is described as designing the job to fit the worker and not forcing the worker to fit the job.
