Half Blood Blues Esi Edugyan Half Blood Blues reveals the story of a group of American and German jazz musicians in Berlin and Paris around the time period of World War 2. The novel follows the group of musicians while explaining the the events and obstacles that steered the group throughout the story. Within the group of young musicians, the novel focuses more on on two black men of the group, chip and Sidney griffiths. The story follows the relationships between the characters, which ultimately demonstrates that weak friendships will fall apart where betrayal lies and loyalty is what is needed to keep a strong friendship. Delilah acted as the mother and glue that held the group together, by provinding them with shelter during the war, help them stay under the radar so they were taken by the boots. The best thing she did for the band was writting them a letter stating “the government left Paris last night. We are going to the gate d'Austerlitz to secure passage on a train. Meet us there when you get this. Don't delay,” (p. 193), which allowed the men to act before it was too late, which lead to their survival. In addition, Delilah contributed heavily in the boys and the bands musical success. Delilah proved to be the loyalty in the novel. In conclusion, The novel prevails in its theme of betrayal vs loyalty. Half Blood Blues demonstrates that the element of betrayal hugely contributes toward the dynamic of Sid and Chip’s friendship. Also, with betrayal the novel shows that both Sid and Chip are very capable of redemption. Strategically, the author characterized Delilah like she was portrayed to provide that force of loyalty which added personality to the storyline. As a result, the author made a clear moral of how important friendship is and how if the friendship is genuine it will overcome
