HAJJ: The Ultimate Purification for a Muslim Hajj, the pilgrimage to Mecca, is one the pillars of Islam which states that every adult Muslim male and female, who is physically and financially capable, should go on Hajj at least once in his or her entire lifetime. It is one of the largest pilgrimages in the world. According to author Dr. Ali Shariati, “Hajj is man’s evolution towards Allah. It is a symbolic demonstration of philosophy of Creation of Adam”(Shari’ati,Hajj IX). Hajj takes place at a specific time of the Muslim lunar calendar. At this time of the year, millions of Muslims from the four corners of the world come together on the pilgrimage to Mecca, the birthplace of Islam. Pilgrims are supposed to fulfill certain requirements before they can set out on Hajj. Each of the six days holds different rituals that have to be performed by the pilgrim in accordance to the prophet’s doings. Hajj is very significant and plays a very important role in a Muslims life. Its importance is reflected by the generous rewards promised by God to the pilgrims. The pilgrimage is performed each year between the eighth and the thirteenth days of Dhu al-HIjjah, which is the 12th month of the Muslim lunar calendar (Shari’ati 5). In this pilgrimage, the rich and the poor, the black and the white, the old and the young, all are equal in front of Allah. People who are exempt from this pilgrimage are the ones who are suffering from mental disabilities, slaves, women who cannot be accompanied with a man such as husband or close relative, and people who lack sufficient funds. Some Hajjis or pilgrims performing Hajj, arrive in Mecca a few days before the Hajj officially begins, while others seek the opportunity of arriving in the month of Sawm or Ramadan, which is a whole month earlier.
