Group Exercise Essay by Patricia Boyd Over the past 8 weeks I attended a variety of Group Exercise classes with the aim to compare and contrast 4 of those classes. The classes I have chosen are; a Groove class, Zumba Basis class, Zumba Gold class and a Studio Pilates. The Groove Method class was instructed by Nathan Short. Nathan was an incredibly vibrant and passionate character whom commanded our attention from the word go. He had a challenging job as there were possibly over 50 people in the class; however that didn’t seem to faze him at all. I had not attended a Groove class before and wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised that for a freelance style concept, the class was very well structured. That was entirely the result of a fantastic Instructor whom new exactly what he was doing. Clearly he did not just make stuff up as he went along, it was pre –choreographed. Basically The Groove method is a fun way to exercise through dancing (or cool movements for those that are turned off by the word dance) for the health of it. We learnt simple dance moves inspired from hip hop, jazz, krump and breakdance. Then we were able to express those moves in our own way. I got to Groove to cool music doing simple dance moves that I expressed my way. What’s not to love about that! Groove is very different to Zumba even though they are both dance inspired. Zumba classes feature exotic rhythms set to high-energy Latin and international beats. Their slogan is to ditch the workout and join the party and before you know it, you’re getting fit. It’s promoted as easy to do, effective and totally exhilarating. The Zumba class I attended was with Maris Teresa Stone, whom is the Zumba representative for all of South East Asia, Australia and New Zealand.
