Geography 104 Field Trip: Observations of On the class field trip to downtown Victoria, I observed a variety of the different building structures, functions, and diversity and how they have evolved over time. Along with my observations I obtained a grasp on some historical knowledge of places including the harbour, Chinatown, and Bastion Square. The Inner Harbour is provides what some might say the most stunning view in Victoria. It is full of adventure and holds different opportunities for both residents and tourists to really experience and adventure Victoria’s landscape. Along Wharf Street many of the buildings came from a different era, for example, the buildings with windows in the roof is a very French style, as well as buildings from the Victorian era. As we walked the streets a variety of buildings were being refurbished and updated in different ways: new paint jobs, updated structure, and addition in size, yet despite their updates the buildings keep their historical look to them, and often their uniqueness of being from a different era. Another thing to note is how the use of buildings has changed over time. A building that may now serve as a place of business offices may have been at one time a significant historical building. It is absolutely full of a variety of hotels, unique shops, and mainstream stores as well as a plethora of banks. Government Street perhaps contains the most expensive real estate in the downtown area of Victoria, and draws in the wealthier portion of clientele. Chinatown is full of history and excitement, around each twist and turn there is culture, demonstrated through paintings, art, the diversity of stores, and vitality of the street. This unique place is a huge tourist attraction and fittingly has an ample number of Chinese restaurants. Also found there are many small, unique, and cultural shops, in historical buildings, that when combined with the cultural aspect of Chinatown make this place a must see for all. Each building is beautiful, and none are the same. The alleyways are exciting and China town is a fun place for all. Of course the uses of the buildings and the buildings themselves are always becoming more modern, yet history is found for miles in this small but vibrant part of Victoria. Victoria’s historical landmarks make this city unique and full of depth.
