In alignment with a political standpoint a cathedral was an important building to have in any major city because they were often used for “the most secular matters” to discuss city business and things of the sort. In doing this most of the cities with large cathedrals did not have to build a city hall therefore saving valuable

), there’s a tremendous amount of detail put into it, and perhaps one of the most defining features of it is that it has got the patron in it. Since it was commissioned by someone besides the church, they wanted to be put in the piece of art that they paid to be painted. The patrons of the altarpiece appear on the far left side, as if they were part of the scene itself. Now we have Italian renaissance art. Some defining characteristics of it are that it is very classical (drapery tends to cling to the body, revealing the perfection of all the idealized bodies), they used plenty of linear perspective (whereas Northern art was more medieval, so they didn’t much care for that), they liked using illusions in their work, and they didn’t have patrons in their work because the church usually commissioned all the art.

In earlier times, cathedrals were often built in the Romanesque style. This architecture was more solid and square. However, many cathedrals in later medieval times were Gothic, which was a style of architecture that evolved in the early 1100s and describes the particular church architecture that spread throughout medieval Europe.
Gothic involves many types of expressions. Gothic artists present their ideas through the forms of literature, architecture, film, sculptures, paintings, and music. Many times, one type of gothic inspires another, creating connection between the two. In this way, each gothic genre rises to a more universal level, creating a much broader understanding of the word “Gothic”. Gothic writers, such as Mary Shelley, influence Gothic music, as she uses diction, setting, and tone in her book Frankenstein.
Stepped forms were another important element in Art Deco, as can be best seen in some of the famous buildings that were created in this style. Other favoured components were trapezoids, zigzag lines, and a strong use of symmetry that could only be found in man-made objects. Motifs such as chevrons, sunbursts, spilling fountains, and even automobile grilles were key parts of the lexicon of Art Deco design. Much of the furnishings of Art Deco were a reaction to the austerity of World War I. Walls were painted cream or brown, and although left mostly plain, would sometimes have a thin border stencilled underneath the ceiling and in corners.
