Mombasa is experiencing urbanisation meaning there is an increase in the proportion of people living in urban areas as compared to rural areas.(BBC Bitesize, 2014) Mombasa follows the traditional pattern of land use as most other developing cities. Mombasa has a population of approximately 1.4million people out of which approximately 939,370 people live in urban areas. (Kenya Open Data, 2011) Within the expanding economic base and rapid growth of the urban population Mombasa is slowly starting to increase in size and is experiences an urban sprawl.
