Genre is a key theory within the study of film. This essay shall provide a summary, analytical study and critique of its application. To complete this essay, various sources have been explored in order to provide a detailed and balanced analysis. There are many aspects used to define a genre of a film, such as: setting, costumes, specific recurring objects or motifs, and iconography. Iconography includes visual conventions such as expressionistic lighting, nocturnal activities and events, images and interpretations. Barry Keith Grant (cited in Neale, 2007) states “genre movies are those commercial feature films which, through repetition and variation, tell familiar stories with familiar characters in familiar situations”. For example, horror films in order to be considered a horror film will apply certain themes such as the creation and the repression of the “Other”, the evil or bad character within the film – the monster. Other themes and motifs include the symbolic and literal transgression of borders, monstrous femininity, the uncanny and the sublime. Film Genre can also be defined by how a spectator identifies with a film. Richard Jameson (cited in Altman, 2004) states “Movies belong to genres much the way people belong to families or ethnic groups”. In considering the most simplistic of genres, such as comedy or western, a movie spectator can develop a mental image of what to expect from a film, be it visual or conceptual. Film genre can also be considered an extension of literary genre; many theories and criticisms are in fact borrowed from literary genre. Like literary critics, film genre theorists and critics will also quote the likes of Aristotle or Marx.
