Gemeinschaft and Gesellschaft

Hunter Ventura Sociology Toennies Crititcal Questions Response Toennies focuses on two main points in his paper. These are Gemeinschaft and Gesellschaft. Gemeinschaft tends to be associated with a community like atmosphere, there is a sense of intimacy and there is a sense of familial belonging felt. Gemeinschaft involves a sense of fellowship, everyone has each other’s backs, one must conform to be accepted. Whereas in Gesellschaft it has an association with society in which there is more individualism and most tend to be self-interested. People in Gesellschaft tend to be different and that is acceptable, its more business and labor oriented. Toennies seems to favor the Gemeinschaft way, you can tell simply by the way he talks about it. He makes it seem more honorable, it appeals more to those who enjoy conforming and being just like everyone else. He makes it seem like home everywhere you go, a comfortable feeling of belonging exists. People are there to help you and try and make you feel welcome. Despite Toennies clear affinity towards Gemeinschaft, there are some things that could be found undesirable about it. For example if you don’t fit into a circle in Gemeinschaft then you are own your own, completely alienated. Also, there really isn’t any way to get ahead because you are always trying to help out everyone else, there isn’t much competition. Also because everyone is so alike there is a lack of culture, mainly because the culture is singular, there is only one. Personally, I do come from a Gemeinschaft. I grew up in Hollidaysburg, PA which is a small town about a half hour away from State College. I like its ideals of a sense of community and I like the altruistic small town vibe it exuberates, however, I think part of the reason I like Pittsburgh so much is that it is more of a Gesellschaft.
