Four Functions of Management XXXXX XXXXXX MGT/330 February 3, 2012 XXXXX XXXXXX Four Functions of Management Management is an activity used by all businesses and organization to direct personnel within the organization to accomplish a desired goal or objective with the resources that are available. Management finds ways to creatively solve problems that an organization may encounter. Problems can be solved creatively through implementing the four functions of management. The four functions of managements are planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. This paper will define the four functions and how each relates to an organization I used to be a part of, the U.S. Navy. Planning The planning function is a process that involves the development of the organization’s mission and objectives. It may also determine how the goal will be accomplished. Planning sets the foundation for the completion of a given goal. The planning process in the Navy begins with high ranking Officers who implement plans to carry out various goals at sea. However, in the navy they use words such as objective or mission. To effectively manage there must be follow up on objective goals. This is very critical because a manager must be able to determine if his or her strategy is effective and whether or not adjustments need to be made. The framework for how a goal must be completed is laid out within the planning process. Organizing The organizing function consists of the organizational internal structure, which relies on the manager to organize the employees and tools the organization will need to complete a goal. During this function it is the focus of the manager to divide task and decide what employee roles will be. In the Navy, individuals are assigned different jobs. Therefore it is necessary to split up the command into different departments. For
