The Five People You Meet in Heaven Essay A person's relationship with another person, no matter how insignificant it may seem, can often make a huge difference in one's life; Mitch Albom expresses this very thought in his novel The Five People You Meet in Heaven. The main character Eddie, an amusement park worker, meets with souls in heaven who had some part in his life after his death. Each of the five people he meets teaches him an important lesson. In The Five People You Meet in Heaven, Eddie’s father and the character called the Captain both had a great impact in Eddie’s life and in his death. Eddie had two strong male forces in his life, his father and the Captain. Both of these characters cared greatly for Eddie, and vice versa, but none of them showed it well. Eddie’s father was hard to please, hard to impress, and hard on Eddie. He was even abusive and neglectful to his son at times. The Captain showed little affection toward Eddie, but like Eddie’s father, he cared. When Eddie ran into a burning hut half crazy, the Captain shot him in the leg to bring him back to reality. While their actions were sometimes cruel, both Eddie’s father and the Captain showed concern for Eddie and his well being. While both the Captain and his father care for Eddie and do not show affection well, they played very different roles in his life and death. Eddie’s father introduced him to the pier where Eddie spent most of his life; he showed him the ropes for his future. After the war, his father all but disowned him after Eddie hurt his pride. He basically left his son, while the Captain swore to never leave him behind. The Captain rescued Eddie from himself, and the burning barn, and then sacrificed his life for his men not too much later. He went to check for landmines and was blown up to save Eddie and the other members of his unit. In his death, Eddie’s father taught him
