In the late 1800’s, farmers started becoming another minority in the American Society. They were taken advantage of and given limited political power which caused mayor concerns among them. Though the over production of crops resulted them problems such as the deflation of prices, farmers had valid reasons to complaint against the economy. It was nearly impossible for farmers to make a profit of crops, especially since some had invested a great deal of money in modern equipment that would allow them to produce twice as many goods. The modernization of technology played a big role during this time and only made it harder for farmers to get their point across. Technology played a big role in the development of industrialization by making things easier. For example, the Bessemer process was the first inexpensive industrial process for the mass-production of steel. The Bessemer process revolutionized steel manufacture by decreasing its cost, and increasing the scale and speed of production. New inventions occurred from this invention, more money was made, and general improvements were made. American farmer began to find it harder and harder to live comfortably as industrialization grew rapidly. Farmers were suffering losses year after year and were forced to have their mortgages foreclosed on, as they saw it, by their “Eastern Master (Doc D).” The reason the farmers blamed this “Eastern Master” was because no one was aiding them in their falling prices. Deflation became a major problem for the farmers which made them highly upset. The Populist Party (1892) believed that the current situations in the government and economy had led to the corruption of many farmers. “Corruption dominates the ballot-box, the legislatures, the Congress, and even touches the ermine of the bench. (Doc. A) The farmers were becoming demoralized because they felt as if they didn’t have any support from the newspapers due to the government controlling the media.
