Work is a means by which a person grows in union with God and participates in the salvation plan for mankind and the world (Laborem Exercens, Pope John Paul II) Furthermore we become co-creators with God by incorporating him in our work, and hence our vocation. Individuals are called to fulfil their vocation through replicating the mission of the Church within the society. A person’s vocation is their purpose in life, it’s the desire to serve God under the intention to embrace a just world and spread the good news. Mother Teresa, born in 1910, gave a moral example of work and vocation that was accepted across all cultures, classes and religions. Her continuous help to the suffering humanity reflected the actions of Jesus. Furthermore she is recognised for her indefatigable commitment to aiding the poorest communities throughout the world, but mainly in the slums of Calcutta. From an early age, Mother Teresa knew her calling was to dedicate her life to God and others within the society. The inception of her first calling was at the age of nine when her father passed away. As a result of this tragedy, Mother Teresa became extraordinarily close to her mother, a pious and compassionate woman who instilled in her daughter a deep commitment to charity. Convinced that it was her vocation to entirely devote her life to God; Mother Teresa joined the religious order Loreto Sisters of Dublin. The choice of leaving her family, and losing the opportunity to marry and have children proved to be difficult. However her dedication to God was inexorable, hence shortly after she became a nun. In 1937, Mother Teresa took her final vows to a life of poverty, chastity and obedience.
