Evidenced Based Practice – Literature Review I am currently employed at Northwest Hospital in Randallstown, Maryland. This facility is a 264 private room in patent hospital. This facility serves the populations of western Baltimore County, suburban Baltimore City, and Carroll and Howard Counties. I work on the surgical orthopedic unit. On this unit I provide care to in patients with basic medical conditions as well as those recovering from all types of general, plastic and bariatric surgery. Many see dollar signs when they think about HIPAA compliance and believe a hefty investment is required. The choice is obvious: Make an upfront investment of time and resources to become compliant or eventually pay the costs to recover from a violation of the standards (Reber, 2001, p.360). The purpose of this article is to steer individuals the right direction toward policies that will help achieve HIPPA compliance. The five steps this article mentions are: 1. Complete a risk assessment, 2. Collaborate with stakeholders, 3. Craft policies that reflect what you want to accomplish, 4. Review purchases of IT and medical equipment from a risk management perspective and 5. Develop a culture of accountability (Reber, 2011, p. 361). The article suggests establishing a baseline for improvement by completing a risk assessment. The result of a risk assessment can serve as a blue print for areas that need improvement. No one person in any organization has fully mastered the role and responsibility of accountability of his/her colleges. In order to ensure that all bases are covered in achieving compliance collaboration is a must. Collaboration among decision-makers is essential for successful and lasting alterations to privacy and security policies, since buy-in is more likely when people have an opportunity to contribute opinions and ideas (Reber, 2011, p.…show more content…
Nurses are often the first point of contact for patients. Patients often must disclose personal details about their life style and past experience with nurses. This disclosure happens under the assumption that this information will only be shared on a need to know basis with those involved in their care.
