Eternal Security Essay

I agree with the Arminian View, that a person has free will to accept Christ or reject Him, but I do not believe a true believer can lose their salvation. Salvation is a gift and once a person receives Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, God will not take the gift back; this is eternal security (Rom 11:29). However, many who have prayed the prayer of confession are still unconverted. They simply prayed a prayer, but their hearts were far from God (Matt. 15:8). The fruit of the Spirit will produce spiritual fruit in a believer’s life (Gal. 5:22). There will be natural struggles even as Paul said in Romans 7:15a, “For what I will to do, that I do not practice; but what I hate, that I do” (NKJV). There must be some outer changes to reflect upon what has taken place within the heart. These changes may not be radical, but there will be some changes. Apostasy and backsliding are different. A backslider is a believer, who through some type of discouragement or the lust of the flesh has turned away from serving God. But, when the heart of a believer has truly been affected by the love of God, they will come back to Him. They have tasted the goodness of the Lord, and like the prodigal son, they realize they have a loving Father and return to Him. Apostasy is when a person has “willful, ongoing, and unrepentant sin in their lives” after receiving the truth of the knowledge of Jesus Christ; they have abandoned the faith. The doctrine of eternal assurance can impact a believer in a negative way, when they believe they must work in order to keep eternal salvation. A believer’s salvation is not dependent on their own ability, only the work of Jesus Christ on the cross can satisfy the debt of sin. Man’s eternal security is rooted in their faith in Christ alone.
