In Japan it’s called “Apple sickness” or “Ringo-byõ” (りんご病). In Hungary it’s called “Butterfly pox”. *Epidemiology: Erythema infectiosum is a viral infection caused by Erythrovirus , previously called Parvovirus B19 . It’s predominantly affects children between the ages of 3 and 15, but any age may be affected, an adult who is not immune can be infected with Parvovirus B19 and either have no symptoms or develop the typical rash of Fifth disease. *Symptoms: * The most striking symptom is red rash on the cheeks. * A couple of days before the rash appears, mild symptoms of flu and itching may occur. * The rash then spreads to the arms and legs either at the same time or a few days later. In rare cases the whole body is involved. * Itching is usually present. * Painful or swollen joints frequently occur in adults, especially women. * The patient may have high temperature and suffer from fatigue. * In many cases the illness passes undetected as there are no noticeable symptoms. However, even people without symptoms may be infectious. Fifth disease is usually a mild illness that resolves on its own among children and adults who are otherwise healthy. Joint pain and swelling in adults usually resolve without long-term disability. *Transmission: * The virus is transferred from one person to another via airborne droplets from the nose and throat, for example when coughing or sneezing. * Parents, or people working with children, are liable to infection. * An infected pregnant woman can transfer the
