Epidemiology: Childhood Poverty in the United States Janine Cortese NUR 408 January 16, 2012 Nancyruth Leibold The Epidemiology of Childhood Poverty in the United States It is estimated that 15 million children live in poverty in the United States (National Center for Children in Poverty, 2010, para. 1). In public health nursing epidemiology is essential in implementing effective programs to provide better outcomes for children living in poverty. Childhood poverty in the United States is being studied by epidemiologists and the resulting data shows a complex pattern of physical and mental health problems directly related to poverty. The ill effects on children who live in poverty may be preventable and treatable through program development…show more content…
The purpose of epidemiology is to aid in establishing preventative programs and to control the development and spread when trends are identified in populations (Miller-Keane, 2003, para. 4). In the United States, the health issues surrounding childhood poverty have been identified as a nation problem by the public health system and are under epidemiologic study on the national, regional, and local levels. To be able to develop effective programs to combat the obesity epidemic among children living in poverty in the United States, descriptive epidemiology, the first stage of epidemiologic study, is being done. Descriptive epidemiology is examining the occurrence of health-related problems surrounding childhood poverty. The necessary data is being collected including time and place of occurrence and the characteristics of the children affected. Tentative theories have been and are currently being generated from the collected data, the initial hypotheses are formed, and additional hypotheses are being formed (Miller-Kean, 2003, para. 4). The second stage of the epidemiologic study of the health-related effects of childhood poverty in the United States, analytic epidemiology, is testing hypotheses generated in the first stage of epidemiologic study…show more content…
Existing descriptive epidemiology provides the data and tentative hypotheses for public health to move on to the second phase of epidemiologic study, analytic epidemiology. The CDC presents the results of analytic epidemiology in the Children’s Food Environment State Report, 2011 where it presents opportunities for community action in relation to “selected behaviors, environments, and policies that affect childhood obesity through support of healthy eating” (CDC, 2011). The analytic epidemiology conducted by federal and private organizations test the tentative theories of the descriptive epidemiology and plan, implement and test programs to reduce the morbidity and mortality of the health disparities of childhood
